Overview

The Newport Beach Film Festival (NBFF) is a competitive eight-day festival held each October in Newport Beach, California. The 27th edition runs October 15 to 22, 2026. NBFF screens over 350 films from more than 50 countries and draws 58,000+ attendees across its run, making it one of the highest-attendance film festivals in Southern California.

NBFF is accredited by the Irish Film and Television Academy (IFTA), meaning its short film competition winners qualify for IFTA award consideration. The festival is not FIAPF-accredited and is not an Academy Award-qualifying festival for the Oscars.

The festival's programming includes a Pacific Rim section that focuses on films from Japan, South Korea, China, Hong Kong, Taiwan, Southeast Asia, and the Pacific Islands. NBFF does not pay screening fees for accepted titles. Filmmakers cover the cost of shipping exhibition copies to the festival. The festival returns feature film prints postage prepaid but does not return short film materials.

Required Submission Materials

Each submission must include:

1. A preview screener link (Vimeo or unlisted YouTube) that remains active through the final deadline
2. One screenshot from the film, minimum 5x4 inches at 300 dpi, maximum 10 MB, no text overlay
3. A synopsis of the film
4. A valid email and phone number for contact

The festival communicates exclusively through the email address submitted with the entry. Filmmakers must contact NBFF directly if their email changes, as the festival is not notified when emails are updated on FilmFreeway.

• Feature Film Competition - international narrative features competing for jury prizes including Best Feature Film, Best Director, Best Actress, Best Actor, Best Cinematography, and Best Screenwriter

Festival History

NBFF was founded in 2000 and held its first edition in Newport Beach. The festival has run annually since then, growing from a regional event into an eight-day festival with 350+ films and 58,000+ attendees. The festival moved from its original spring dates to October starting with the 2025 edition.

The Pacific Rim section was developed to serve Southern California's Asian American population and to create a bridge between Asian cinema and Hollywood industry audiences.
