Taiwan International Documentary Festival (TIDF)

Overview

The Taiwan International Documentary Festival (TIDF) is Taiwan's largest documentary film festival. The 15th edition runs May 1 to 10, 2026, in Taipei. TIDF is a biennial festival, operating in even-numbered years. It is organized by the Taiwan Film and Audiovisual Institute (TFAI), the national film archive and cultural organization.

TIDF has four competitive categories: Asian Vision Competition, International Competition, Taiwanese Competition, and the cross-category "Beyond Reality" Award (Zai Jian Shi Shi). The festival accepts submissions of all subject matters, forms, styles, lengths, and formats, with a programming philosophy that values artistic ambition and social engagement equally.

There is no entry fee for submissions. This is unusual for a festival with TIDF's competitive stature and removes the financial barrier that limits submission access at many international festivals.

The festival invites one director or producer from each nominated film in the Asian Vision, International, and Taiwanese competitions to attend, providing accommodation and a limited economy-class round-trip flight. This travel support is uncommon among Asian documentary festivals and reduces the attendance cost for selected filmmakers.

Submission Details

Submissions are handled through the TIDF online entry system on the official website. Key details for the 2026 edition:

The online entry system automatically shuts down at the deadline. TIDF does not view late entries. The festival strongly advises applicants to submit as early as possible rather than waiting until the deadline.

Submission Process

1. Register a My TIDF account on the TIDF website
2. Log in and navigate to the Submission tab
3. Complete the online entry form for each film
4. Receive a unique entry number upon submission
5. Check spam email if the entry number is not received

Each film requires a separate entry form. The system generates a unique entry number that should appear on all related materials.

Competitions and Prizes

TIDF has four competitive categories. Each competition nominates up to 15 films. All nominated films receive a nomination certificate.

Asian Vision Competition

Presents the diversity of Asian documentary filmmaking, emphasizing works with Asian subject matter or by Asian directors that demonstrate unique perspectives and innovative cinematic language.

Beyond Reality Award (Zai Jian Shi Shi)

A cross-category award nominated by the festival programming team from across all festival sections. The nomination list is announced before the festival. This award recognizes films that embody the spirit of "Beyond Reality" - works that challenge and expand the boundaries of documentary form.

Programming and Selection

In addition to the four competitive categories, TIDF programs several non-competitive sections:

• Re-encounter - retrospective programs exploring documentary history
• Into the Real - formally experimental nonfiction cinema
• Films of Liberty - documentaries on democracy and freedom themes
• Special programs - thematic programs curated for each edition

The preliminary selection committee, composed of film professionals and TIDF programmers, determines which competition category each submitted film enters and selects the nomination shortlists. The committee's decisions are final and cannot be appealed. The committee does not provide individualized feedback on non-selected submissions.

Festival History

TIDF was founded in 1998 and has operated biennially since then, making it one of the longest-running documentary festivals in Asia. The 15th edition in 2026 continues the festival's commitment to formally adventurous and socially engaged documentary cinema.

The festival is organized by the Taiwan Film and Audiovisual Institute (TFAI), which was formerly known as the Taiwan Film Institute. TFAI is the national film archive and cultural organization responsible for preserving and promoting Taiwan's audiovisual heritage. TIDF is one of TFAI's flagship programs.

Taiwan's documentary culture has developed in parallel with the country's democratic transition since the late 1980s. What Filmmakers Should Know

Travel support for nominees: TIDF invites one director or producer from each nominated film in the Asian Vision, International, and Taiwanese competitions to attend the festival. The festival provides accommodation and a limited economy-class round-trip flight. This is a significant benefit that reduces the attendance cost for selected filmmakers, particularly for international filmmakers traveling to Taipei. The specific terms are communicated after nomination, and the festival reserves the right to modify or cancel this support due to force majeure.

Screening obligations: Nominated films must sign a screening authorization agreeing to provide the festival with up to 3 free screenings during the festival period (additional media preview screenings may be requested with advance notice). Once the nomination list is published, filmmakers are obligated to participate fully in the festival and cannot withdraw for any reason.

Post-festival touring obligation: Award-winning films (those receiving cash prizes) must agree to provide the festival with 6 free touring/promotional screenings within 2 years after the festival ends. Non-cash awards may require separate licensing negotiations for promotional screenings. Filmmakers should factor this touring obligation into their distribution strategy, as it may affect other festival or platform exclusivity arrangements.

Tax on prizes: All competition prizes are subject to Taiwanese income tax withholding. Bank transfer fees and postal/telecommunication fees are deducted from the prize amount. For international winners, the prize is converted to foreign currency at the exchange rate on the transfer date.

For Asian documentary filmmakers: The Asian Vision Competition is the most targeted competitive category for Asian filmmakers. The Grand Prize of NTD 320,000 is the largest single prize at the festival. The competition is restricted to Asian subject matter or Asian directors, which means the competitive pool is regional rather than global.

The 2024 Asian Vision Competition Grand Prize went to Taman-taman (Park) (dir. SO Yo-hen, Taiwan), praised by the jury as "surprising, audacious, and innovative." The film also won the Taiwan Competition Grand Prize, making it a double winner. The 2024 International Competition Grand Prize went to The Trial. The 2024 Beyond Reality Award went to The Clinic (dir. Midi Z, Myanmar/Taiwan).

The 2022 Asian Vision Competition Grand Prize went to The Burrows (dir. HU Sanshou, China). The 2022 Taiwan Competition Grand Prize went to Taste of Wild Tomato (dir. LAU Kek-huat), which also screened at Busan IFF. The 2022 Visionary Award went to Blue Island (dir. CHAN Tze Woon, Hong Kong).

The 2018 Taiwan Competition Grand Prize went to Small Talk (dir. HUANG Hui-chen), which won the Teddy Award for Best Documentary at the 2017 Berlinale and was Taiwan's submission for the Foreign Language Film Oscar.

Submission Tips Specific to This Festival

TIDF's programming philosophy values artistic ambition and social engagement equally. The preliminary selection committee determines which competition category each submitted film enters, so filmmakers do not choose the category themselves. No feedback is provided on non-selected films.

Films must have Traditional Chinese and English bilingual subtitles for screening copies. Budget for subtitle creation if your film does not already have Traditional Chinese subtitles.
