Dili International Film Festival
Timor-Leste's most important film event, held in Dili, presenting Timorese and Southeast Asian cinema in one of the world's newest nations, supporting the development of cinema as a tool of national identity and cultural memory.
Overview
The Dili International Film Festival is Timor-Leste's most important film event. Founded in 2014 in Dili, the capital of the world's youngest nation (independent since 2002), the festival presents Timorese and Southeast Asian cinema and uses film as a tool of national identity building and cultural memory in a country still processing the trauma of its independence struggle.
Timor-Leste's path to independence was one of the most brutal of the 20th century's liberation struggles. The Indonesian occupation from 1975 to 1999 resulted in the death of an estimated one-third of the population. Cinema has played a role in documenting this history and in the country's reconciliation and healing process.
The festival reflects Timor-Leste's extraordinary resilience and its determination to build cultural institutions alongside the political and economic infrastructure of a new nation.
