Overview

Sheffield DocFest is the UK's leading documentary festival. The 33rd edition (2026) ran 10 to 15 June, curated from over 2,900 submissions and featuring 45 World Premieres, 17 International Premieres, 5 European Premieres, and 35 UK Premieres from 64 countries. Thirty-seven films competed across five competition categories.

The festival combines a public screening programme with one of Europe's most active documentary industry markets. The MeetMarket, now in its 21st edition, is a flagship pitching and financing event for new documentary features and series. The festival also runs the Alternate Realities programme for immersive and interactive non-fiction work, plus a year-round engagement programme including monthly DocNights screenings at Showroom Cinema and monthly documentary screenings in London.

Sheffield DocFest is Academy Award-accredited: the Grand Jury Award for the International Competition qualifies the winning film for Oscar consideration. The International Short Film Competition award is also Academy Award, BAFTA, and BIDA accredited.

Creative Director Raul Niño Zambrano and Managing Director Mimi Poskitt led the 2026 edition, which launched GEN DocFest, a new children's, young people, and family strand. The 2026 festival drew thousands of attendees across six days of screenings, talks, performances, industry pitches, and exhibitions.

Film entries for the 2026 Sheffield DocFest programme are now closed. Submissions were made through the Sheffield DocFest website.

MeetMarket Applications:

The MeetMarket is the festival's flagship industry event for new documentary features and series. Applications for the 2026 MeetMarket opened with a deadline of 28 January 2026, 18:00 UK time. Projects are notified of the outcome in mid-April.

• If a film is complete and has been entered (or is planned to be entered) into the 2026 film programme, it is not eligible for the MeetMarket or Rough Cut presentations.
• Successful MeetMarket applicants pay a participation fee of GBP 260 excluding VAT (GBP 312 including VAT) per attending team member. This fee includes curation and organisation of one-on-one meetings, all marketplace activities, and a full industry pass giving access to the whole festival programme.
• Once a project is completed, the Sheffield DocFest MeetMarket laurel should be included in the credits with the line "Presented at Sheffield DocFest MeetMarket [year]."

• International Competition (supported by Apple TV) - the main competition for feature documentaries. • Tim Hetherington Award (presented in association with Dogwoof) - recognises a film and filmmaker that best reflects the legacy of photojournalist and filmmaker Tim Hetherington. 2026 winner: The Long Cuban Night, dir. Sergio Fernandez Borras. Special Mention: Birds of War, dir. Janay Boulos and Abd Alkader Habak.
• Youth Jury Award - selected by five young documentary enthusiasts. 2026 winner: Crocodile, dir. The Critics and Pietra Brettkelly. Special Mention: All Rivers Spill Their Stories to the Sea, dir. Jeanie Finlay.

Additional Awards:

• Audience Award - voted by festival-goers from all feature films across the programme. 2026 winner: Ultimate Thunder, dir. Ben G Brown, prod. Lia Hayes and Stuart Ramsay.
• Shine Global Children's Resilience Award for Documentary - recognises storytelling about children's experiences worldwide. 2026 winner: One In a Million, dir. Itab Azzam and Jack MacInnes.

What Filmmakers Should Know

The MeetMarket is Sheffield DocFest's most significant industry asset. Approximately 30 projects are selected each year for one-on-one meetings with international commissioning editors, distributors, sales agents, and funders. The GBP 260+VAT participation fee per team member includes a full industry pass, making it one of the more accessible documentary markets in Europe compared to markets that charge higher accreditation fees.

The 2026 MeetMarket Awards provide tangible support beyond cash prizes: the Tokyo Docs Award offers free participation and travel to Tokyo Docs 2026 (3-6 November 2026); the MEDIMED Award provides an opportunity to pitch at MEDIMED's Pitching Forum in Sitges (9-10 October) with accommodation, transportation, and accreditation covered; the East Doc Platform Award offers a consultation during production; The Farm Post-Production Award provides GBP 10,000 in in-kind post-production services; and the DocsConnect Conscious Filmmaking Award by Taskovski Training offers mentorship.

The International Competition Grand Jury Award is Academy Award-accredited, meaning the winner automatically qualifies for Oscar consideration. This makes Sheffield DocFest one of the few UK festivals that can put a documentary on the Oscar pathway.

The 2025 programme presented 117 films (83 features and 34 shorts), including 53 World Premieres, 17 International Premieres, 8 European Premieres, and 37 UK Premieres. Films came from 68 countries of production with 40 languages represented across 201 screenings. The 2026 edition drew from over 2,900 submissions, indicating a highly competitive selection process.

Sheffield DocFest does not provide individual feedback on film submissions. The festival's year-round programme includes monthly DocNights at Showroom Cinema in Sheffield and monthly documentary screenings in London, providing extended visibility for selected films beyond the festival week.

Festival History

Sheffield DocFest was founded in 1994 and has grown into the UK's leading documentary festival and one of the most important documentary industry events in Europe. The festival is held annually in June in Sheffield, a former steel city that reinvented itself through culture and creativity.

The MeetMarket launched in 2006 and has become a central fixture of the European documentary financing calendar. Now in its 21st edition, it connects documentary filmmakers with international commissioning editors, distributors, sales agents, and funders through curated one-on-one meetings.

The festival has evolved its competition structure over the years to include five categories: International Competition, International First Feature Competition, International Short Film Competition, Tim Hetherington Award, and Youth Jury Award. The International Competition Grand Jury Award is Academy Award-accredited, placing Sheffield DocFest among the select group of festivals whose top prize carries Oscar qualifying status.

The 2026 edition, under Creative Director Raul Niño Zambrano and Managing Director Mimi Poskitt, introduced GEN DocFest, a new strand for children, young people, and families. The festival also expanded its year-round engagement, with monthly DocNights at Showroom Cinema in Sheffield and monthly documentary screening programmes in London continuing into 2026/2027.
