The Palm Springs International ShortFest is the largest short film festival in North America. Founded in 1995, the 7-day competitive festival screens more than 300 short films from approximately 70 countries each June in Palm Springs, California. The 31st edition in 2025 screened 311 films from 64 countries, selected from over 6,200 submissions from 141 countries. ShortFest is Academy Award-qualifying, BAFTA-qualifying, and Canadian Screen Award-qualifying across multiple categories.
The 32nd edition runs June 23 to 29, 2026. ShortFest operates as a companion event to the Palm Springs International Film Festival held each January, giving Palm Springs two major film events annually. The June ShortFest is entirely dedicated to short film in all forms: live action, documentary, animation, and experimental.

History
Palm Springs ShortFest was founded in 1995 as a dedicated short film program alongside the Palm Springs International Film Festival. Over 31 editions, it has grown into North America's largest dedicated short film event, screening hundreds of films annually from approximately 70 countries.
The festival has been a consistent launchpad for short filmmakers seeking Academy Award nomination. Multiple ShortFest winners have gone on to receive Oscar nominations and wins, making the festival a reliable predictor of short film awards season outcomes. The 2025 Best of the Festival winner, Retirement Plan, went on to receive an Oscar nomination for the 2026 Academy Awards.

Submission fees are non-refundable. If a film was submitted last year but not accepted, it can be resubmitted only if it was completed in 2025 or 2026. Films completed in 2024 or earlier are not eligible for the 2026 edition.

Submission Tips Specific to This Festival
The 40-minute limit is enforced to the second. A film with a runtime of 40:01 is not eligible. Filmmakers should verify their exact runtime including all credits before submitting. This is the most common disqualification at ShortFest.
ShortFest does not require any premiere status. This is unusual for a festival of its stature. Filmmakers can screen their film at other festivals before or after ShortFest without penalty. However, films that have not yet screened publicly may receive programming priority.
Student films compete in dedicated student categories but are also eligible for all 5 Oscar-qualifying awards. A student film can win Best of the Festival and qualify for the Academy Awards. Student entry fees are the same as non-student fees. There is no student discount on submission costs.
Filmmakers targeting Oscar qualification should note that the Academy requires films to win first place in a qualifying category. Honorable mentions, special jury mentions, and audience awards at ShortFest do not carry Oscar-qualifying status. Only the 5 listed awards qualify a film for Academy Award consideration.
