Overview

The Garden State Film Festival is New Jersey's most important film festival. Founded in 2003 and held annually in Asbury Park, the festival presents independent American and international cinema in New Jersey's most creatively resurgent coastal city.

Asbury Park's identity as the birthplace of Bruce Springsteen's musical career, its Victorian-era boardwalk architecture, its history of decline and remarkable revival as an arts and LGBTQ+-welcoming destination, and its position on the Jersey Shore create a festival environment with genuine character.

New Jersey's proximity to New York creates an audience with sophisticated cinema tastes while also creating a distinctly New Jersey identity -- the state is often overlooked in favor of its neighbors, and the festival celebrates what is distinctively Garden State about American culture and life.
