Black Hills Film Festival

South Dakota's most important film festival, held annually in Rapid City, presenting independent American cinema in one of America's most historically resonant landscapes, near Mount Rushmore and the sacred Black Hills of the Lakota Sioux.

Overview

The Black Hills Film Festival is South Dakota's most important film festival. Founded in 2007 and held annually in Rapid City -- the gateway to the Black Hills, Mount Rushmore, Crazy Horse Memorial, and the sacred Paha Sapa of the Lakota Sioux Nation -- the festival presents independent American cinema in one of the continent's most historically resonant landscapes.

The Black Hills region carries extraordinary historical and cultural significance: the site of the 1874 gold rush that violated the Fort Laramie Treaty with the Lakota, the location of battles central to the Plains Indian Wars, and the home of living Lakota communities who maintain deep connections to the land. Films addressing Native American history and contemporary Lakota life find a particularly informed audience in this context.

Rapid City serves as the commercial center for the Black Hills region and provides access to both urban South Dakota audiences and the Lakota communities of the surrounding Pine Ridge and Rosebud Sioux reservations.
