Green Mountain Film Festival

Overview

The Green Mountain Film Festival (GMFF) is a non-competitive festival held each March in downtown Montpelier, Vermont. The 25th edition runs March 12 to 15, 2026. GMFF screens narrative, documentary, and experimental features and shorts from around the world at The Savoy Theater and The Capitol Theater in Montpelier. The festival is fiscally sponsored by ORCA Media, a community media organization based in Montpelier, and donations are tax-deductible.

GMFF is not Academy Award-qualifying, not FIAPF-accredited, and does not present competitive awards. The festival's programming philosophy is curatorial rather than competitive: the screening committee selects films they want to share with the Montpelier community, and all programmed films are treated equally. The festival actively encourages submissions from queer and BIPOC filmmakers and boundary-pushing storytellers.

The 2026 presenting sponsors are The Bridge and Greenway Institute, with major support from the Norman J. and Doris Fisher Foundation. GMFF also runs a Film Slam, a timed filmmaking competition during the festival with registration open through February 12, 2026.

Submission Details

GMFF accepts submissions through FilmFreeway. The submission window typically opens in late summer or fall and closes in late November or December. For the 2026 festival, submissions are being accepted via FilmFreeway with a final deadline in late January 2026.

Eligibility rules:

• Films must be Montpelier, VT premieres. Films that have already screened publicly in Montpelier are not eligible.
• Films must not be currently available to stream online at the time of the festival.
• Films with premieres before March 2023 are not eligible (for the 2025 festival; equivalent recency requirements apply to future editions).
• Non-English films must be submitted with English subtitles.
• GMFF accepts shorts, documentaries, features, and experimental work from filmmakers of all backgrounds.
• The festival especially encourages submissions from queer and BIPOC filmmakers and boundary-pushing storytellers.

What Filmmakers Should Know

Non-competitive format: GMFF does not give awards. The festival's value is in audience engagement and community connection, not prizes or industry exposure. If you need festival laurels for your poster or distribution strategy, GMFF may not be the right target. If you want an intimate, engaged audience in a politically active small-town setting, it is a strong choice.

Montpelier premiere requirement: All films must be Montpelier premieres. If your film has already screened at another Vermont festival or venue in Montpelier, it is not eligible. This is a hard rule, not a preference. Films that have screened elsewhere in Vermont (Burlington, Brattleboro, Middlebury) remain eligible as long as they have not played in Montpelier specifically.

No streaming eligibility: Films available on streaming platforms at the time of the festival are not eligible. If your film is scheduled to launch on a streaming service before or during the festival dates, it will be disqualified. This rule protects the festival's value proposition as a communal theatrical viewing experience.

Intimate scale and audience access: Montpelier is the smallest state capital in the United States, with a population under 8,000. The festival's venues are within walking distance of each other in downtown Montpelier. This creates an unusually intimate festival where filmmakers and audiences interact naturally without the hierarchy of badge systems or industry zones. The audience is politically engaged, environmentally conscious, and culturally curious.

Screening committee composition: The screening committee is composed of community volunteers. The festival actively recruits Vermonters of color and from diverse backgrounds to join the committee, reflecting an intentional effort to diversify the programming perspective. If your film speaks to underrepresented communities or perspectives, the committee is structured to receive that work with genuine attention.

Satellite screenings: GMFF has historically extended beyond Montpelier with satellite screenings in St. Johnsbury (since 2010) and Essex Junction (2018). These extensions are not guaranteed each year but indicate the festival's regional reach within Vermont.

No market or industry infrastructure: GMFF has no film market, no industry accreditations, and no distribution deal-making. The festival is a community cultural event, not an industry marketplace. Filmmakers attending GMFF should expect engaged audiences and community connection, not industry networking or acquisition opportunities.

Festival History

GMFF was founded in 1997 by a group of volunteers who wanted to see more international films in central Vermont. The first festival took place in Montpelier in 1997. A second edition followed in March 1999, and the festival has been an annual March event since then, with pause years for various reasons including a four-year hiatus from 2020 to 2023. The 23rd festival returned to downtown Montpelier in March 2024 after the hiatus, with screenings at The Savoy Theater and The Capitol Theater.

The 25th edition in 2026 counts only years in which a festival was produced, which is why 1997 to 2026 does not equal 25 calendar years. The festival has historically expanded beyond Montpelier: satellite screenings began in St. Johnsbury in 2010 and extended to Essex Junction at the Essex Cinema in 2018.
