Overview

The Ho Chi Minh City International Film Festival (HCMCIFF) is Vietnam's most important international film festival. Founded in 2012 and held alternately between Ho Chi Minh City (formerly Saigon) and Hanoi, the festival presents Vietnamese and international cinema and supports the development of one of Southeast Asia's most rapidly growing film industries.

Vietnam's film culture has deep roots in both the French colonial period and the American War era, with Vietnamese cinema from the 1970s and 1980s achieving international recognition for its depictions of wartime experience. Contemporary Vietnamese cinema has moved far beyond war themes, with a new generation of filmmakers exploring urban modernity, diaspora experience, and the complex social changes of Vietnam's economic miracle.

The alternating Ho Chi Minh City/Hanoi format reflects the deep north-south cultural differences within Vietnam, with the former South's cosmopolitan energy contrasting with the northern capital's political and historical gravitas.
