Karlovy Vary International Film Festival
The most important film festival in Central and Eastern Europe, held annually in the historic Czech spa town of Karlovy Vary, awarding the Crystal Globe for best film.
Overview
The Karlovy Vary International Film Festival (KVIFF) is the most prestigious film festival in Central and Eastern Europe. Held annually in late June and early July in the historic spa town of Karlovy Vary (Carlsbad) in the western Czech Republic, the festival combines competitive programming, industry activity, and a uniquely festive atmosphere that makes it one of the most beloved festivals among filmmakers and audiences alike.
KVIFF has been a FIAPF-accredited competitive festival since its founding in 1946, making it one of the oldest continuously operating film festivals in the world. The festival's Crystal Globe (Kristalovy Globus) is awarded to the best film in the main competition, and the festival presents additional prizes for directing, acting, and documentary filmmaking.
The festival attracts approximately 130,000 admissions during its nine-day run, with screenings taking place in the town's historic cinemas and thermal spa venues. Karlovy Vary's intimate scale and walkable layout create a concentrated festival experience where filmmakers, industry professionals, and audiences share the same spaces.

What Filmmakers Should Know
KVIFF accepts submissions for its competition and sidebar sections. The East of the West competition is a distinctive feature that provides a competitive platform specifically for filmmakers from Central and Eastern Europe and neighboring regions. This section has launched the international careers of numerous directors from the post-Soviet and Balkan film industries.
The KVIFF Eastern Promises industry platform includes a works-in-progress presentation, a development platform, and a co-production market focused on Central and Eastern European projects. For filmmakers from the region, this platform provides essential connections to international financiers and distributors.
The festival's atmosphere is legendary. The thermal spa town setting, open-air screenings, and late-night events create a social environment that encourages genuine human connection between filmmakers and audiences.
