Mar del Plata International Film Festival
Latin America's only FIAPF-accredited competitive film festival, held annually in November in the Argentine coastal city of Mar del Plata, celebrating international and Latin American cinema.
Overview
The Mar del Plata International Film Festival is the only FIAPF-accredited competitive film festival in Latin America. Founded in 1954, the festival takes place annually in November in the elegant Argentine coastal city of Mar del Plata, approximately 400 kilometers south of Buenos Aires. The festival's position as the sole A-list competitive festival in Latin America makes it the most prestigious film event in the region.
Argentina has a rich filmmaking tradition and the festival serves both as a showcase for local and regional talent and as a platform for international cinema reaching Latin American audiences. The Argentine film industry has produced internationally acclaimed directors including Lucretia Martel, Pablo Trapero, and Damian Szifron, and Mar del Plata has been an important launchpad for Argentine films.
The festival's November timing places it at the tail end of the international festival calendar, giving it access to acclaimed films from earlier in the year while also showcasing world premieres.
