Overview

Nordisk Panorama Film Festival is the competitive showcase for Nordic short films and documentaries. The 2026 edition runs September 17 to 22 in Malmo, Sweden. The festival selects approximately 57 films from over 500 submissions across five competition categories, awarding a total of 25,000 EUR in prize money. The Best Nordic Short Film winner qualifies for Academy Awards consideration in the Short Film category without the standard theatrical run.

Submission is free of charge. Films must be independent productions that qualify as major Nordic productions or be directed by a Nordic director (Denmark, Finland, Iceland, Norway, or Sweden). The festival accepts films completed in the current or preceding year. Deadlines for the 2026 edition: films completed in 2025 must be submitted by February 15, and films completed in 2026 by April 15. Applicants receive notification of selection or rejection by early July.

Malmo's location on the Oresund strait, connected to Copenhagen by the Oresund Bridge, creates a cross-border festival environment. Attendees from Sweden and Denmark commute between the two countries, and the festival draws industry professionals from across the Nordic region including broadcasters NRK (Norway), DR (Denmark), YLE (Finland), RUV (Iceland), and SVT (Sweden), all of which are significant documentary commissioners and investors.

Submissions are made online via the Nordisk Panorama website. There is no entry fee.

Eligibility Rules

• The film must qualify as an independent production
• The film must qualify as a major Nordic production or be directed by a Nordic director (Denmark, Finland, Iceland, Norway, or Sweden)
• The film must be completed within the current or preceding year
• All films must be subtitled in English throughout, including over English dialogue
• Films previously submitted to Nordisk Panorama's Competition Selection are ineligible

Major Awards

The Best Nordic Short Film winner qualifies for consideration in the Short Film Category of the Annual Academy Awards without the standard theatrical run, provided the film complies with Academy rules.

In 2025, the Best Nordic Short Film was won by Runar Runarsson's O (Iceland, 20 min). The Best Nordic Documentary and other category winners are announced on the festival's final day.

What Filmmakers Should Know

Nordisk Panorama is the primary domestic recognition platform for Nordic short and documentary filmmakers. The festival's industry activities connect filmmakers directly with the Nordic broadcasting ecosystem. DR, NRK, YLE, RUV, and SVT all attend as commissioners and acquisition executives, not just as sponsors. For documentary filmmakers seeking Nordic broadcast pre-sales or commissioning deals, Nordisk Panorama is the most efficient single event.

The Nordisk Panorama Forum runs concurrently with the festival and is the Nordic co-production and financing forum for documentary and short film projects in development. Forum accreditation is separate from festival accreditation. The 2026 forum project deadline is May 19, with accreditation by August 1. Projects are selected based on their estimated potential to travel internationally and their financial feasibility. Priority is given to projects that have not been pitched at other events before Nordisk Panorama Forum. Applicants are notified by July 15.

For filmmakers with completed shorts or documentaries, the free submission removes the financial barrier that many festivals impose. However, the festival's selection rate is approximately 11% (57 films selected from 529 submissions in 2024), making it competitive despite the lack of an entry fee.

Festival History

Nordisk Panorama was founded in 1990 and has grown into the most comprehensive annual survey of Nordic short and documentary filmmaking. The festival has moved locations over its history before settling in Malmo, where it has become a fixture of the city's cultural calendar.

The 2024 edition (35th) ran September 19 to 24 and selected 57 films from 529 submissions, including 21 documentaries and 36 short films. The 2025 edition ran September 18 to 23. The 2026 edition (37th) runs September 17 to 22.

The festival has adapted to changes in Nordic film funding. In 2026, Nordisk Panorama is collaborating with Documentary Association Europe to host a delegation of international producers, and the Nordic Short Film Pitch opens for submissions in April 2026. A joint initiative between Nordic film institutes and broadcasters invites documentary projects for a September pitch session in Malmo.
