Sarajevo Film Festival
The most important film festival in Southeast Europe, founded during the Siege of Sarajevo in 1995, serving as the primary platform for Balkan and regional cinema and operating the CineLink industry program.
Overview
The Sarajevo Film Festival is the most important film festival in Southeast Europe and one of the most remarkable cultural institutions on the continent. Founded in 1995 during the Siege of Sarajevo, when the city was under bombardment, the festival began as an act of cultural defiance and has grown into the premier platform for cinema from the Balkans and the broader Southeast European region.
The festival's founding story gives it a moral authority that no other European festival possesses. While much of the world looked away, a group of Sarajevo citizens maintained a film festival under siege conditions, affirming cinema as an essential human activity even in the worst of circumstances. This heritage informs the festival's programming philosophy, which consistently champions films that reflect on human dignity, conflict, and resilience.
Sarajevo screens approximately 250 films during its eight-day run in August and attracts regional and international industry professionals through its CineLink Industry Days program, which has become one of the most important co-production platforms for Southeast European cinema.

CineLink Industry Days provides structured co-production meetings, works-in-progress presentations, and development grants for projects from the region. Talents Sarajevo, a collaboration with Berlinale Talents, provides mentorship and professional development for emerging filmmakers from the region.
The festival's summer timing and Sarajevo's complex, historically charged atmosphere create a genuinely unique environment. Screenings in the open-air venues of the rebuilt city provide a cinematic experience unlike any other festival.

Festival History
The festival was founded in 1995 by Mirsad Purivatra during the final months of the Siege of Sarajevo. The founding edition screened films to audiences who attended despite ongoing military activity in the city. After the Dayton Peace Agreement ended the war, the festival grew rapidly and established itself as the most important film event in the post-Yugoslav region. The festival's resilience has made it a symbol of cinema's power to affirm humanity under the most challenging circumstances.
