Overview

The Sarasota Film Festival is a 10-day independent film festival held annually in April in Sarasota, Florida. Founded in 1998, the 28th edition ran April 10 to 19, 2026, screening 102 films including 47 features (4 world premieres, 17 Florida premieres) and 39 short films. The 29th edition is scheduled for April 9 to 18, 2027. The festival is Academy Award-qualifying in its short film categories and accepts open submissions through FilmFreeway.

For independent American filmmakers, Sarasota offers a spring platform between the major winter festivals (Sundance, SXSW) and the summer circuit. The festival screens at multiple venues across downtown Sarasota including CineBistro, New College of Florida, Ringling College, and the Sarasota Art Museum. Ticket prices are accessible: regular screenings cost $22 ($16 for members), matinees $15 ($11 members), and spotlight/centerpiece events $30 ($22 members). Children 12 and under attend youthFEST films for free.

Academy Award Qualifying Status

The Sarasota Film Festival is an Academy Award-qualifying festival for short films. Short films that win the festival's Best Short Film award become eligible for consideration in the Academy Awards' Animated Short Film and Live Action Short Film categories without the standard theatrical run, provided they comply with Academy rules.

Festival History

The Sarasota Film Festival was founded in 1998 and held its first edition in 1999. The festival has grown from a small regional event to one of Florida's most recognized independent film festivals, building on Sarasota's existing arts infrastructure including the John and Mable Ringling Museum of Art, the Sarasota Opera, and the Asolo Repertory Theatre.

The 2025 edition (27th annual, April 4-13) screened 37 features with 4 world premieres and 10 Florida premieres, plus 41 short films. The 2026 edition (28th annual, April 10-19) expanded to 47 features with 4 world premieres and 17 Florida premieres, plus 39 short films, for a total of 102 films. The festival is directed by Paul Ratner and is sponsored in part by Sarasota County Tourism Development Tax Revenues, with grant contributions from the Community Foundation of Sarasota County and Gulf Coast Community Foundation.
