Overview

The Tallinn Black Nights Film Festival (Pimedate Ooode Filmifestival, or POFF) is the only FIAPF-accredited competitive film festival in the Nordic and Baltic region. Held annually in November in the Estonian capital, POFF has grown rapidly from a small regional event into a major international festival that screens approximately 250 films and attracts over 80,000 admissions during its two-week run.

POFF takes its name from Estonia's dark November nights, when daylight hours are short and the long evenings create the perfect atmosphere for watching films. The festival's November timing positions it late in the festival calendar, allowing it to program a mix of world premieres and acclaimed films from earlier festivals.

The festival operates several sub-festivals and industry platforms, including the Industry@Tallinn and Baltic Event co-production market, which has become an important meeting point for Nordic, Baltic, and Eastern European film professionals. POFF's FIAPF accreditation, achieved in 2014, marked the festival's arrival as a major player on the international circuit.

  • Official Selection (Competition) -- international features competing for the Grand Prix
  • First Feature Competition -- debut films
  • Rebels with a Cause -- provocative and boundary-pushing cinema
  • Estonian Films -- a showcase for new Estonian cinema
  • Baltic Film Competition -- films from Latvia, Lithuania, and Estonia

What Filmmakers Should Know

POFF accepts submissions for its competition and sidebar sections. The festival is well suited to European filmmakers seeking a prestigious competitive premiere, and its November timing means it does not conflict with the major spring and fall festivals. The First Feature Competition is a strong platform for debut directors.

Industry@Tallinn and Baltic Event provides a structured co-production market with pitching sessions, works-in-progress presentations, and one-on-one meetings with financiers and distributors. The market is particularly important for filmmakers working in the Nordic, Baltic, and Eastern European regions.

Festival History

POFF was founded in 1997, six years after Estonia regained its independence. The festival has tracked the growth of Estonian cultural confidence and the country's integration into the European cultural landscape. POFF's achievement of FIAPF competitive accreditation in 2014 was a milestone for the Baltic region's film culture.
