Entry fees: Approximately $30 to $50 for early bird submissions, with higher fees for later deadlines. Fees are non-refundable. No refunds are given for double submissions, though a credit for another submission is provided in cases of double submission. No refunds for submissions that are withdrawn for any reason.

What Filmmakers Should Know

The LA premiere requirement is strictly enforced. If your film has already screened at another Los Angeles festival, it is not eligible for HollyShorts. Plan your festival circuit accordingly: if HollyShorts is a target, hold your LA premiere for this festival.

The Academy Award-qualifying status is the festival's most concrete industry value. Winning one of the four qualifying categories (Best Short, Best Live Action, Best Animation, Best Documentary) makes your film eligible for Oscar submission without needing a separate qualifying run. This is a significant shortcut for short filmmakers pursuing Academy recognition. The festival's track record supports this: 16 alumni shorts made the 2026 Oscar shortlist, and HollyShorts alumni have received Academy Award nominations at the 98th ceremony.

The festival's Hollywood location is not just geographic. Industry attendees at the 2025 edition included programmers from Tribeca, Cleveland, Newport Beach, Evolution Mallorca, Newfilmmakers LA, and Dances with Films, along with agents, managers, producers, and development executives who attend specifically to discover short film talent for feature and television development. HollyShorts has expanded beyond its Hollywood flagship. The 3rd Annual HollyShorts London Film Festival runs November 12 to 15, 2026, and the 2nd Annual HollyShorts Dubai Film Festival runs January 14 to 17, 2027. These satellite festivals extend the HollyShorts brand internationally, though the Hollywood edition remains the primary Academy Award-qualifying event.

The Made in LA Award, offering $1,000 for local filmmakers, provides direct cash support for Los Angeles-based short filmmakers. This is separate from the category prizes and is specifically for films made in Los Angeles.

All selected films screen on DCP. Filmmakers must deliver a DCP (via Simple DCP, the festival's vendor) for screening. If you are submitting, plan for DCP creation as part of your post-production budget.

Festival History

HollyShorts was founded in 2005 by Tommy Stovall and Daniel Sol with the specific goal of connecting short film talent with the Hollywood industry. The festival began as a small showcase and has grown over 21 editions into a 10-day event screening approximately 300 films from over 100 countries.

The festival achieved Academy Award-qualifying status in four categories, making it one of the most Oscar-relevant short film festivals in the world. It also achieved BAFTA-qualifying status, extending its recognition to the British Academy.

In 2025, the festival was recognized by MovieMaker magazine as one of the Top 50 Film Festivals Worth The Entry Fee, a designation that reflects the festival's industry value relative to its submission cost.

The festival has expanded internationally with HollyShorts London (launched 2024, 3rd edition in 2026) and HollyShorts Dubai (launched 2026, 2nd edition in January 2027). The Hollywood edition remains the flagship and the only edition with Academy Award-qualifying status.
