Visions du Reel (Nyon International Documentary Film Festival)

Overview

Visions du Reel is one of the world's leading documentary film festivals. Held annually over 10 days in April in Nyon, Switzerland, on the shores of Lake Geneva, the 57th edition in 2026 (April 17 to 26) screened 164 films from a record 75 countries. The festival received 3,700 submissions for its 2026 edition, an increase of more than 23% compared to 2023. Of the 128 new films presented, 83 were world premieres and 8 were international premieres. The 2026 program included 58 first films, including 36 debut features, and 26 Swiss co-productions.

The festival programs documentary films across all formats and approaches, from traditional observational cinema to hybrid and experimental nonfiction. Films in competition receive world, international, or European premiere status. The Grand Jury Prize in the International Feature Film Competition carries a CHF 20,000 cash prize. In 2026, the prize went to From Dawn to Dawn (dir. Xisi Sofia Ye Chen, Spain/France), a debut feature about the director's brother, a Chinese gangster living in Spain.

For documentary filmmakers, Visions du Reel offers both a competitive festival platform and a major industry market. The VdR-Industry program (April 19 to 22, 2026) selected 31 projects from over 600 submissions, with 34 directors representing 28 countries. The industry awards distribute more than CHF 80,000 in cash and in-kind prizes, including the Eurimages Co-Production Development Award of EUR 20,000. The 2026 festival opened with Cover-Up by Oscar-winning filmmaker Laura Poitras.

Submission Details

Submissions are made through the online submission form on the Visions du Reel website. The full regulations for the 2026 edition are available at visionsdureel.ch.

Submission Deadlines (2026 Edition):

• Early deadline: October 17, 2025 (CHF 30 fee)
• Final deadline: December 15, 2025 (CHF 40 fee)
• VdR-Development Lab deadline: November 6, 2025 (no fee to apply)

Film Length Categories:

• Short film: up to 30 minutes
• Medium-length film: 31 to 70 minutes
• Feature film: over 60 minutes

Eligibility:

• Films must be submitted in their original language with English subtitles (and French if available)
• Online screeners must reach Visions du Reel by December 31, 2025 at the latest
• Films in competition are screened in world, international, or European premiere
• The festival reserves the right to disqualify submissions that do not meet eligibility criteria without refunding registration fees

VdR-Industry Submissions (separate from film submissions):

• VdR-Pitching: international co-production and financing forum for nonfiction projects in late development. Selected projects pay a CHF 400 participation fee, which includes industry accreditations for up to four participants.
• VdR-Work in Progress: showcase for creative nonfiction projects seeking distribution, festivals, and sales
• VdR-Rough Cut Lab: four-day rough cut intensive for projects in editing stage
• VdR-Development Lab: nine-month intensive lab for nonfiction projects from Africa, Asia, Latin America, the Middle East, and Eastern Europe. No fee to apply. Deadline: November 6, 2025.

What Filmmakers Should Know

Submission volume and acceptance: The 2026 edition received 3,700 submissions and selected 128 new films, making the acceptance rate approximately 3.5%. The festival's growing submission numbers (up 23% since 2023) reflect its increasing international status as the second most important festival in Switzerland for the launch of new films.

Grand Jury Prize: The top award in the International Feature Film Competition is CHF 20,000 (approximately USD 25,500), presented by La Mobiliere. The 2025 winner was The Prince of Nanawa (dir. Clarisa Navas, Argentina/Paraguay/Colombia), a film shot over 10 years following a boy on the border between Argentina and Paraguay. The 2026 winner was From Dawn to Dawn (dir. Xisi Sofia Ye Chen, Spain/France).

Industry platform: VdR-Industry is one of the most important documentary co-production markets in Europe. The 2026 edition selected 31 projects from over 600 submissions, with 61% presented by women directors, 45% by first-time feature directors, and 58% directed and produced by filmmakers from the majority world. Industry awards total more than CHF 80,000 in cash and in-kind prizes, including:

Swiss broadcaster access: Swiss broadcasters including SRG SSR are active co-production partners. The RTS Award is a EUR 10,000 pre-buy, giving filmmakers direct access to Swiss public broadcasting. The National Competition prize of CHF 15,000 is presented by SRG SSR.

Emerging filmmaker focus: The Opening Scenes competition is dedicated to emerging directors, presenting 15 first short films or student films. The Regard Neuf competition (when active) provides a platform for first or second documentaries. In 2026, 58 first films were screened, including 36 debut features.

Festival setting: Nyon is a small city on Lake Geneva, about 25 minutes by train from Geneva. The festival's intimate lakeside setting creates a focused environment for industry networking. Industry accreditation costs CHF 350 (valued at CHF 350 for 2026), with additional accreditations available at CHF 160 per person for project participants.

Festival History

Visions du Reel was founded in 1969 as Cinema du Reel before evolving through several phases and name changes to establish its current identity. The festival's location in the French-speaking part of Switzerland, with close ties to France's documentary ecosystem, has shaped its programming sensibility toward formally adventurous and essay-film traditions.

The festival has been led by Artistic Director Emilie Bujès and Administrative and Operations Director Melanie Courvoisier. In 2026, Philippe Bischof served as Chairman of the Festival, with the festival opening in the presence of Alain Berset, Secretary General of the Council of Europe. The VdR-Industry program is under the direction of Sabine Fayoux Cantillo.

Visions du Reel has built its reputation on championing formally innovative documentary work and films from underrepresented regions. The 2026 edition featured films from Sudan, Vietnam, Indonesia, Yemen, and Palestine, with 75 countries represented across all selections. The festival is supported by the Federal Office of Culture (FOC), Media Desk Switzerland, and the Canton of Vaud.
