World Festival of Animated Films Zagreb
One of the world's oldest and most respected animation festivals, held biennially in Zagreb, Croatia, with FIAPF accreditation and a special focus on central and Eastern European animation traditions.
Overview
The World Festival of Animated Films Zagreb (Animafest Zagreb) is one of the world's oldest and most respected animation festivals. Founded in 1972 and held biennially in Zagreb, Croatia, Animafest has FIAPF Competitive Specialised accreditation and is recognized as one of the four major international animation festivals alongside Annecy, OIAF, and Hiroshima.
Zagreb has a special place in animation history as the birthplace of the Zagreb School of Animation, the internationally acclaimed mid-20th century movement that pioneered a distinctive approach to limited animation. Films from the Zagreb School won Academy Awards and influenced animation worldwide, and the city retains deep expertise in the animated form.
The festival's biennial format (held in even-numbered years alternating with Hiroshima) presents competitive programs across multiple categories, with particular strength in European animation. The Grand Prix is one of the most respected prizes in international animation.

What Filmmakers Should Know
Zagreb accepts open submissions in its biennial years. The festival's Central European location and its connection to the Zagreb School tradition give it particular relevance for European and Eastern European animators. The FIAPF accreditation and biennial format concentrate the best animation work from a two-year period into a focused competitive event.
The Grand Prix Zagreb is one of the most meaningful recognitions in international animation, and a Zagreb selection provides exposure to the European animation community and the broader international animation industry.

Festival History
Animafest Zagreb was founded in 1972, building on the legacy of the Zagreb School that had emerged in the 1950s and 1960s. The festival's founding coincided with international recognition of Yugoslav animation as a world-class tradition, and it has maintained its commitment to animation excellence through Croatia's post-Yugoslav independence and EU integration.
