Overview

The Alter-Ciné Foundation was established in memory of Canadian filmmaker Yvan Patry, who died in October 1999. Patry co-founded the production company Alter Ciné and directed numerous documentaries and current affairs programs across Africa, Latin America, and Asia. The foundation he inspired carries forward his commitment to independent voices from the Global South by providing financial assistance to documentary filmmakers from those regions.

The foundation offers two grant levels: a major grant of up to 10,000 Canadian dollars and smaller grants of 5,000 Canadian dollars. Both are targeted exclusively at filmmakers born and living in Africa, Asia, or Latin America.

What It Funds

Alter-Ciné grants support the production of documentary films by filmmakers from the Global South. The grant is intended to help filmmakers complete or advance projects that might otherwise lack access to the development and production resources available in higher-income film markets. There is no restriction on the film's language -- projects may be made in any language chosen by the filmmaker.

Projects should align with the foundation's aims: the documentation of life, culture, and social realities in the Global South, approached with independent creative vision rather than a formulaic or commercial editorial frame.

Eligibility

Applicants must be born and living in Africa, Asia, or Latin America at the time of application. The grant is directed at individual filmmakers, not production companies or organizations. Applicants should submit a detailed production budget alongside a financing plan that demonstrates the project's overall funding approach -- the Alter-Ciné grant is typically one component of a broader financing structure rather than the sole source of production funds.

The Foundation's Philosophy

The Alter-Ciné Foundation is explicit about its orientation: it exists to support filmmakers whose geographic and economic circumstances have historically limited their access to the documentary funding ecosystem. The foundation operates with the understanding that many of the most important stories in documentary film originate in regions where production funding is scarce, and that the global documentary market benefits when those stories are told by the people who live them.

Who Should Apply

Documentary filmmakers based in Africa, Asia, or Latin America with a project that documents social realities, culture, or human experience in their region. Both emerging and mid-career filmmakers are eligible. The grant is particularly valuable for first-time feature documentary directors who lack access to the regional or international funding sources available to more established filmmakers.
