BBC World Service/Sundance Nonfiction Audio Collaboration
A joint initiative between the BBC World Service and Sundance Institute supporting nonfiction audio storytellers -- podcast and radio documentary makers -- with funding and broadcast distribution.
Overview
The BBC World Service and Sundance Institute Nonfiction Audio Collaboration is a partnership supporting nonfiction audio storytellers -- podcast makers, radio documentary producers, and audio journalists -- by providing development funding and the prospect of broadcast distribution through BBC World Service's global platform. The collaboration brings together Sundance Institute's expertise in independent nonfiction storytelling with the BBC World Service's reach across more than 40 languages and its long tradition of ambitious audio documentary.
The partnership reflects the growing recognition that nonfiction audio storytelling -- particularly the long-form documentary podcast -- has emerged as a major creative form in its own right, requiring the same kind of institutional development support that has long existed for documentary film.
What It Provides
The collaboration offers selected nonfiction audio projects development funding and access to both Sundance Institute's and BBC World Service's editorial guidance and production networks. Projects that proceed through the development process may be considered for BBC World Service broadcast, giving audio storytellers access to one of the world's largest radio and podcast distribution platforms.
In addition to financial and editorial support, participants benefit from connection to Sundance Institute's broader nonfiction community, including documentary filmmakers, impact producers, and distribution professionals who work across film and audio formats.
Eligibility
The collaboration is open to nonfiction audio storytellers internationally, reflecting BBC World Service's global mandate. Both emerging and experienced audio documentary makers are eligible. Projects should be substantive nonfiction audio works -- long-form podcast series, audio documentaries, or radio documentary features -- rather than short-form news or interview content.
Filmmakers who also work in audio, or audio storytellers looking to develop their practice with institutional backing, are both well positioned to apply. The Sundance partnership particularly values stories with international resonance and subjects that go beyond the conventional US and Western European documentary market.
Why This Collaboration Matters
BBC World Service has one of the largest and most diverse global audiences of any broadcaster in the world, reaching hundreds of millions of people each week in dozens of languages. For nonfiction audio storytellers whose work has international relevance, a BBC World Service production or broadcast partnership provides a distribution scale that no independent podcast can easily replicate. The Sundance partnership adds credibility within the US independent nonfiction community and opens doors to crossover between audio and documentary film distribution.
Who Should Apply
Nonfiction audio storytellers -- podcast producers, radio documentary makers, audio journalists -- with a long-form project that has international resonance and substantive documentary ambition. Both US and international applicants are welcome.
