Overview

The BFI Doc Society Fund is a partnership between the British Film Institute (BFI) and Doc Society, administered using National Lottery funding. It is the primary dedicated documentary funding stream in the UK, supporting independent nonfiction films and immersive projects by UK filmmakers with a stated priority for expansive, director-led storytelling that is representative of all UK society.

As part of the BFI's National Lottery Funding Plan for 2026 to 2029, the BFI has committed over £7.2 million to documentary funding and talent development across three years. This makes the fund one of the most substantial dedicated documentary funding commitments in Europe.

What It Funds

The BFI Doc Society Fund operates across several distinct strands:

Feature Documentary Fund supports the development and production of feature-length documentary films by UK filmmakers. The fund backs ambitious, independent documentary features with strong directorial vision. Projects with a cinematic approach and potential for theatrical and festival release are prioritised.

Emerging Filmmakers Strand provides a dedicated pathway for directors at the beginning of their careers, with lower barriers to entry than the main production fund. This strand recognises that emerging talent needs accessible support before they have the track record required by larger grants.

Mid-Career to Established Filmmakers Strand provides a separate production pathway for filmmakers with a demonstrable track record in documentary, allowing more experienced directors to access support proportionate to their project ambitions.

Immersive Fund dedicates resources to immersive nonfiction projects -- virtual reality, augmented reality, and other emerging forms -- with £300,000 ring-fenced for this category. This reflects Doc Society and the BFI's recognition that documentary storytelling is evolving beyond the linear film format.

Development Fund provides dedicated development support for feature-length documentaries at the pre-production stage, funding research, access development, and the preparation of financing materials.

Eligibility

Applicants must be UK filmmakers or UK-based production companies. Projects must be nonfiction -- documentary films, hybrid nonfiction, and immersive nonfiction are all eligible depending on the strand. British certification may be required for some strands, with guidance available on the BFI Doc Society website.

Co-productions with non-UK partners may be eligible depending on the level of UK creative and financial involvement. Filmmakers should consult the specific strand guidelines carefully, as eligibility requirements differ between the emerging, mid-career, and feature strands.

Who Should Apply

UK documentary filmmakers at any career stage. Emerging directors should target the Emerging Filmmakers Strand; mid-career and established directors should look at the main production strands. Filmmakers working in immersive nonfiction formats should apply to the Immersive Fund. All applications should demonstrate strong directorial vision and a project with a clear UK public benefit.
