Overview

The Black Women Film Collective is an organisation dedicated to supporting Black women filmmakers across documentary and narrative formats. It provides grants, mentorship, fiscal sponsorship services, and professional development opportunities to Black women who are creating films and media projects. The collective operates with the understanding that structural barriers in the film industry disproportionately affect Black women filmmakers, and that community-based organisations with specific mandates are necessary to address those barriers directly.

The collective is part of a broader ecosystem of organisations working to ensure Black women's stories and creative perspectives are represented both in front of and behind the camera in American cinema.

What It Funds and Provides

The Black Women Film Collective supports filmmakers through several mechanisms:

Grants provide direct financial support to Black women filmmakers at the development and production stages. Grant amounts vary by cycle and available funding. Both documentary and narrative projects are supported.

Fiscal Sponsorship allows Black women filmmakers without a 501(c)(3) organisational structure to receive tax-deductible donations from individual donors and apply for foundation grants that require fiscal sponsorship. This service substantially expands the funding landscape available to filmmakers who lack their own nonprofit status.

Mentorship connects emerging Black women filmmakers with established professionals who provide guidance on both the craft and business of filmmaking.

Professional Development includes workshops, networking events, and educational programs designed to build the skills and industry knowledge that Black women filmmakers need to advance their careers.

Eligibility

Programs are specifically designed for Black women filmmakers. Eligibility criteria vary by program -- some are open to filmmakers at any career stage, while others target emerging or early-career artists. Both documentary and narrative filmmakers are welcome. Filmmakers should check the Black Women Film Collective website for current open programs and specific eligibility requirements.

The Collective Model

The Black Women Film Collective operates as a community as well as a funding body. Its strength lies not only in the direct financial and fiscal sponsorship support it provides but in the relationships it builds among Black women filmmakers -- a network of peers and allies that provides ongoing professional and creative support beyond any single grant or program cycle.

Who Should Apply

Black women filmmakers in the United States working on documentary or narrative projects at the development or production stage, who want both financial support and connection to a community of peers and mentors with shared experience in the industry.
