Chicago Film XLerator (XL Lab)

Overview

The Chicago Film XLerator, now operating as XL Lab, is a content lab and accelerator program run by Creative Cypher, a media collective founded by producer Troy Pryor. The program is designed to discover and support underrepresented and BIPOC filmmakers by providing a combination of direct grant funding, mentorship from industry professionals, equipment access, and distribution pipeline connections. XL Lab has run five cycles and expanded from a periodic competition to a year-round accelerator program.

The program is built on the premise that money alone is not enough to move a project forward. Filmmakers also need editorial feedback, professional connections, and accountability structures. XL Lab delivers all of these alongside its financial support, which distinguishes it from traditional grant programs that disburse funds and leave the filmmaker to figure out the rest.

What the Winner Receives

The XLerator prize package is valued at up to $50,000 and includes both cash and in-kind resources. The 2022 cycle winner, Kimberly Michelle Vaughn, received a package that included:

• $10,000 cash grant (channeled through Chicago Filmmakers)
• Placement in Chicago's Filmmakers Showcase
• Black Harvest Film Festival passes
• 1-year membership to Chicago's Screenwriters Network
• Fundraising and marketing consultations through Niche on Demand
• 50% off equipment rental from Camera Ambassador
• Courses at The Second City
• Mentorship and production support from industry executives and partners

The cash component has historically been $10,000, with the remainder of the $50,000 value coming from in-kind services, equipment, education, and professional access. Filmmakers should understand that this is a hybrid prize - not $50,000 in cash.

XL Lab and XL Fest

XL Lab is the year-round accelerator arm of the program. It provides underrepresented filmmakers with a pathway from idea to execution through mentorship, production support, and distribution connections. The program has built partnerships with organizations including Kickstarter, which joined as a sponsor in 2025 to provide direct mentorship on crowdfunding strategy for participating creators.

XL Fest is the public-facing festival component, taking place annually in August in Chicago. The 2025 edition ran August 14 through 23. XL Fest includes a Pitch Competition where five film teams compete for entry into XL Lab. Winners receive a monetary grant, equipment access, studio space, a year of mentorship from showrunners and industry executives, marketing support, and a streamlined pathway toward various festivals.

Notable XL Lab Projects

Past XL Lab-supported projects include Z Cher-Aime's Captain Zero (featuring Keith David), selected for the Tribeca Film Festival by Whoopi Goldberg; Dusan Brown's GO, backed by Viola Davis; and George Ellzey's Cottage Grove and Patrick Wimp's Mister Abbot, both of which earned Telly Awards.

Eligibility

The Chicago Film XLerator is designed for underrepresented and BIPOC filmmakers based in the Chicago metropolitan area. Both documentary and narrative formats are eligible. The program targets emerging and early-mid-career filmmakers who have a project in development or early production and who would benefit from the structured support of an acceleration program alongside financial funding.

The program has announced plans to scale to additional cities, including Atlanta, Milwaukee, Miami, London, Puerto Rico, and Los Angeles. Filmmakers outside Chicago should check the Creative Cypher website for information on expansion to their region.

The program has also drawn mentorship support from executives at companies including Bron Studios, Netflix, BET, HBOMax, and Univision. These connections give participants access to industry decision-makers they would not normally reach.

The Chicago Independent Film Context

Chicago has a substantial independent film ecosystem anchored by organizations including the Chicago Media Project, the Gene Siskel Film Center, the Chicago International Film Festival, and a range of local production companies and documentary organizations. XL Lab operates within and draws on this ecosystem, giving participants access to a broader community than the program itself.

Chicago Filmmakers also operates its own Chicago Digital Media Production Fund (CDMPF), which awards cash grants ranging from $3,000 to $20,000 to Chicago artists for socially progressive digital media projects. The CDMPF is a separate program from XL Lab but shares infrastructure through Chicago Filmmakers.
