Emerging Director Program
Film Independent's development program supporting first- and second-time narrative feature directors through labs, mentorship, and direct access to industry professionals.
Overview
Film Independent's Emerging Director Program is a suite of artist development initiatives designed to support first- and second-time narrative feature directors as they develop their craft and build the industry relationships needed to bring their first or second feature to production. Film Independent has operated filmmaker development programs since the early 1980s and has supported many of the most significant independent directors working in American film today.
The Emerging Director Program draws on Film Independent's core labs and fellowships -- including the Directors Lab, the Directing Lab, and Project Involve -- to create structured pathways for directors who are making the transition from short films or student work into professional feature development. The programs combine script feedback, peer cohorts, and direct access to producers, development executives, agents, and distributors.
What It Funds
The Emerging Director Program provides professional development support rather than production financing. Lab participants receive structured script and pitch feedback, one-on-one mentorship from established directors and producers, and access to Film Independent's network of industry professionals. Some affiliated awards -- including the Sloan Fast Track Grant and partner fellowships -- provide cash awards to outstanding participants, but the core program value is in professional development and industry access.
Fellows participate in intensive labs over several months, completing script drafts, participating in workshops, and presenting their projects to industry audiences at Film Independent events.
Eligibility
Eligibility varies by specific program. Most Film Independent labs and fellowships are open to US-based directors who have not yet made a studio feature. Project Involve specifically targets filmmakers from communities underrepresented in the film industry. Some programs require Film Independent membership as a condition of eligibility.
Applications are accepted on annual cycles. Filmmakers should consult the Film Independent website for current open programs and specific eligibility requirements, as the suite of programs evolves each year.
Who Should Apply
First- and second-time narrative feature directors based in the United States who are developing a feature project and who want both structured script development support and direct access to the industry professionals who can help move their project toward production. Film Independent programs are particularly valuable for directors who want to break into the independent film ecosystem without the institutional backing of a studio system.
