Gucci Tribeca Documentary Fund
A Tribeca Film Institute grant providing finishing funds to independent documentary filmmakers whose work highlights diversity, gender equality, active citizenship, and social and environmental change.
Overview
The Gucci Tribeca Documentary Fund is an annual grant established in 2008 as a partnership between the Tribeca Film Institute and Gucci. Over more than a decade of operation, the fund awarded more than $1.5 million to over 105 independent documentary films. It provides finishing funds to documentary filmmakers whose projects highlight diversity, gender equality, active citizenship, and acts of courage, compassion, and environmental or social strength.
The fund operates at the post-production stage, supporting films that are in the final phase of completion. It reflects Gucci's Equilibrium sustainability and social impact program, which connects the brand's philanthropic giving to stories of change and progress.
What It Funds
Gucci Tribeca Documentary Fund grants are finishing funds, designed to help documentaries clear the final hurdles of post-production and reach audiences. Eligible costs include editing completion, colour grading, sound finishing, music licensing, archival clearances, and the preparation of festival and distribution deliverables.
The fund prioritises projects that:
- Highlight diversity and gender equality
- Celebrate active citizenship and civic courage
- Document acts of compassion or strength driving social and environmental change
- Represent voices and stories from underrepresented communities
Projects outside these thematic areas are less likely to be competitive, regardless of their cinematic quality. The thematic alignment with Gucci Equilibrium's social and environmental mission is a genuine selection criterion.
Eligibility
The fund accepts applications from independent documentary filmmakers worldwide. Both US and international projects are eligible, reflecting the fund's interest in global stories of social and environmental significance. Projects must be in the post-production phase -- the fund is not designed for development-stage or mid-production projects.
Films with prior Gucci Tribeca Documentary Fund support are not eligible to apply again for the same project.
Current Status
The Gucci Tribeca Documentary Fund operated for over a decade through Tribeca Film Institute. Following structural changes at TFI, filmmakers should check the Gucci Equilibrium website and the current Tribeca programming pages for the fund's current status and any successor programs.
Who Should Apply
Documentary filmmakers in post-production whose work engages with diversity, gender equality, social justice, active citizenship, or environmental themes. The fund has historically welcomed both emerging and established filmmakers, with a demonstrated preference for projects that amplify underrepresented voices and stories.
