MountainFilm Commitment Grant
Grants of $1,000 to $5,000 for documentary filmmakers in production or post-production making films about adventure, activism, social justice, culture, and the environment.
Overview
The Mountainfilm Commitment Grant supports documentary filmmakers who are telling stories that align with Mountainfilm's core mission: using the power of film, art, and ideas to inspire audiences to create a better world. The fund prioritizes nonfiction stories celebrating adventure, activism, social justice, culture, environmental themes, and the indomitable human spirit. Both short and feature-length documentaries are eligible.
Mountainfilm is one of the longest-running mountain and adventure film festivals in the United States, held annually in Telluride, Colorado. The Commitment Grant is the festival's primary mechanism for directly supporting filmmakers whose work reflects the festival's values and programming focus.
What It Funds
Grants range from $1,000 to $5,000 and support projects in production or post-production. The fund targets films that can be presented in a theatrical setting, gallery, or on television and online -- Mountainfilm is explicit that the goal of its grant program is to help ensure that important stories are both told and heard, not simply funded.
The thematic focus is specific: adventure, activism, social justice, environment, and culture. Projects without a clear connection to at least one of these areas are less likely to be competitive. The festival's programming history -- which has included films on climate change, indigenous rights, expedition filmmaking, and social movements -- gives a useful indication of the kinds of stories the grant committee responds to.
Eligibility
Documentary projects in production or post-production. Both short and feature-length documentaries are accepted. US and international applicants are welcome. The fund accepts applications from filmmakers at any career stage, including first-time feature directors.
Applications are assessed on the strength of the project's alignment with Mountainfilm's mission, the quality of the work already produced, and the realistic prospect of completion and distribution.
Emerging Filmmaker Fellowship
Alongside the Commitment Grant, Mountainfilm also runs an Emerging Filmmaker Fellowship for early-career documentary filmmakers. Filmmakers interested in both opportunities should check the Mountainfilm website for current eligibility requirements and application deadlines for each program.
Who Should Apply
Documentary filmmakers in production or post-production whose work engages with adventure, environment, social justice, activism, or cultural subjects. The grant is particularly well suited to filmmakers whose project has a thematic home at Mountainfilm's festival programming.
