Purin Pictures
A Southeast Asian film fund offering production grants and in-kind post-production support for feature fiction, animation, and documentary films from the region.
Overview
Purin Pictures is a film fund supporting independent cinema in Southeast Asia, established in 2017 under the Purin Foundation. The fund operates two grant programs -- a Production Fund and a Post-Production Fund -- and looks for artists and projects that reflect genuine creative independence and ambition. It has become one of the most important dedicated film funds in the Southeast Asian region, offering both cash support and in-kind post-production services through an established partnership.
Purin defines its mandate broadly: it supports fiction, animation, and documentary projects from Southeast Asia, making it one of the few regional funds that explicitly welcomes all three formats rather than focusing on documentary alone.
What It Funds
Production Fund
Purin's Production Fund provides USD 30,000 for fiction and animation projects and USD 15,000 for documentaries. Projects must be close to production readiness at the time of application -- the fund is designed to support projects that have completed development and are ready to move into principal photography. There is no requirement for marketplace attachment at the application stage.
Post-Production Fund
The Post-Production Fund provides in-kind support valued at USD 50,000 for fiction and animation films and USD 35,000 for documentaries, delivered through a partnership with White Light Studio in Bangkok. The services covered include colour correction, 5.1 sound mix, subtitle spotting, and other specific post-production finishing work. The in-kind model means filmmakers receive professional post-production services rather than cash, which ensures the support goes directly into the film's finishing quality.
Eligibility
Projects must be from Southeast Asia. Both production-stage and post-production-stage films are eligible through the respective fund tracks. Fiction, animation, and documentary formats are all welcome. The fund seeks independent, artist-driven work rather than commercially produced content.
Applications are reviewed on a regular cycle. Filmmakers should consult the Purin website for current submission windows and specific eligibility requirements by fund track.
Why the In-Kind Post Model Matters
The Post-Production Fund's in-kind structure is worth understanding carefully. Rather than receiving a cash grant that might be diverted to other production costs, filmmakers receive professional post-production services at a specific facility. This model guarantees the support is used for its intended purpose and gives filmmakers access to professional finishing infrastructure that might otherwise be unaffordable in local markets.
Who Should Apply
Southeast Asian directors of fiction, animation, or documentary films who are either close to production-ready or in need of post-production finishing support. The Production Fund suits projects that have completed development; the Post-Production Fund suits projects that have completed principal photography and need professional finishing.
