Seed&Spark

Overview

Seed&Spark is a film-specific crowdfunding and distribution platform founded in 2012 by Emily Best. The platform reports an 82% campaign success rate, which it claims is the highest of any crowdfunding platform in the world. For comparison, Kickstarter reports a 37% success rate for creative projects and Indiegogo reports 11%.

The platform charges zero platform fee to creators. The only fees deducted from contributions are Stripe payment processing fees (credit card and debit card charges). Supporters are given the option to add a tip to their pledge to help cover the cost of Seed&Spark services on behalf of creators.

Seed&Spark requires a US bank account and SSN to run a campaign. Campaigns must reach at least 80% of their funding goal to keep the funds raised. If a campaign does not reach 80% by the fundraising deadline, supporter cards are not charged and no funds are released. If the 80% threshold is met, funds are disbursed to the project owner's bank account within 7 business days after the campaign closes. Creators receive a 1099 at the end of the year for funds raised.

How Crowdfunding Works on Seed&Spark

Seed&Spark uses a WishList system that functions like a wedding registry for film production. Supporters can pledge cash or loan/gift items. Project owners offer non-monetary incentives (thank you's, credits, items, or experiences) approved by Seed&Spark. Supporters can also opt out of receiving incentives.

The 80% Threshold

Unlike Kickstarter's all-or-nothing model, Seed&Spark uses a modified threshold: campaigns that reach 80% of their goal keep the funds. This means a campaign raising $8,000 against a $10,000 goal still receives the money. If a project owner pledges to their own project and that payment declines, rendering the total below 80%, all monies must be returned to supporters.

Crowdfunding Specialists

Every project that launches on Seed&Spark gets personalized feedback from Crowdfunding Specialists, who are all working creators themselves. The platform also runs regular crowdfunding workshops. This hands-on support is a core differentiator from general crowdfunding platforms.

Patrons Circle Grants

The Patrons Circle is a grant program through which industry professionals and activists commit between $500 and $2,500 to Seed&Spark crowdfunding campaigns that align with their criteria. Most Patrons look for projects centered on social justice issues including gender equity, bodily autonomy and reproductive rights, racial equity, LGBTQ+ rights, economic justice, climate change, and tech justice.

All crowdfunding campaigns are eligible for Patrons Circle consideration once they have raised at least 30% of their total goal. Campaigns are automatically reviewed for alignment with active Patrons' themes. If selected, the Seed&Spark team contacts the creator directly via email to confirm next steps. Payment is processed through Seed&Spark's fiscal sponsor, The Film Collaborative.

Patrons make tax-deductible contributions to the Patrons fund through The Film Collaborative, a 501(c)(3) fiscal sponsor. Filmmakers whose campaigns are selected receive the grant as a pledge toward their campaign.

Grant Rallies

Seed&Spark runs themed crowdfunding competitions called rallies throughout the year. Rallies are large-scale calls for crowdfunding campaigns centered around a common theme. Participating campaigns can win additional grants and prizes from rally partners. Rally themes have included Asian and Pacific Islander storytelling, LGBTQ+ stories, climate justice, and regional filmmaking communities.

Finishing Funds

Seed&Spark partners with production companies to offer finishing funds to qualified feature film projects in post-production. The current partners are Nice Dissolve, Salem Street Entertainment, and UnLtd Productions, which distribute up to $25,000 in finishing funds. Any feature film crowdfunding for post-production that gathers a minimum of 500 followers can submit for these funds.

Finishing funds are a combination of cash (equity/debt investment) and in-kind services (various post-production services and deliverables), subject to mutually agreeable terms. Executive producer services include advice and introductions for festival strategy, sales, and distribution.

Filmmaker Rewards

Filmmakers who gather followers on Seed&Spark are eligible for over $9,000 worth of perks, products, services, and festival waivers from platform partners. These rewards cover everything from production gear to digital strategy and are unlocked as a campaign builds its follower count. Once a project gets its "Greenlight" (reaches 80% of goal), creators can access free and discounted resources from partners.

Tax-Deductible Contributions

Seed&Spark partners with fiscal sponsors to enable tax-deductible contributions for US-based filmmakers. Donors who itemize their taxes can deduct contributions to qualifying projects, which expands the potential donor pool. The platform's fiscal sponsor for the Patrons Circle is The Film Collaborative.

Streaming Distribution

Filmmakers who have raised and completed their projects on Seed&Spark can distribute their finished films through the platform. This creates a continuous relationship between fundraising and distribution on a single platform, allowing filmmakers to leverage the audience they built during crowdfunding for direct distribution.

Seed&Spark's Terms of Service were last updated November 20, 2025. The platform uses Stripe as its third-party payment processor. Project owners acknowledge that funds, loans, and gifts pledged by supporters are only released if the project reaches 80% of its funding goal.
