Seed&Spark Streaming Platform
An independent filmmaker crowdfunding and streaming platform that integrates tax-deductible fundraising, distribution, and grant rallies to support independent film projects from development through release.
Overview
Seed&Spark is an independent filmmaker platform that combines crowdfunding, fiscal sponsorship, and streaming distribution in a single integrated ecosystem. Founded in 2012 by Emily Best, the platform was built specifically for independent filmmakers who need to raise money, reach audiences, and distribute their work without major studio or broadcaster infrastructure.
Unlike general crowdfunding platforms, Seed&Spark is film-specific and filmmaker-oriented. Its crowdfunding campaigns benefit from the platform's deep integration with the independent film community, its team of crowdfunding specialists who work directly with campaign creators, and its connection to fiscal sponsorship partners that allow US donors to make tax-deductible contributions.
What It Provides
Crowdfunding is Seed&Spark's core mechanism. Filmmakers create campaigns to raise production or distribution funding directly from their audience. The platform's Crowdfunding Specialists -- all working creators themselves -- provide personalised feedback to every project that launches and run regular crowdfunding workshops. The platform's community of filmmakers and supporters is built around independent and underrepresented storytelling.
Tax-Deductible Contributions are enabled through Seed&Spark's partnership with fiscal sponsors, allowing US-based donors to receive a tax deduction for contributions to qualifying projects. This significantly expands a campaign's potential donor pool by making donations financially advantageous for individuals who itemise their taxes.
Grant Rallies are themed crowdfunding competitions Seed&Spark periodically runs in partnership with sponsors. Filmmakers whose campaigns participate in a rally can win additional grants from rally partners -- awards have ranged from hundreds to thousands of dollars per project, with some rallies offering $12,500 or more in prizes. The Asian and Pacific Islander storytelling rally is one recent example.
Streaming Distribution allows filmmakers who have raised and completed their projects to distribute their finished films through the Seed&Spark platform, creating a continuous relationship between fundraising and distribution on a single platform.
Patrons Circle is a grant program through which Patrons contribute $5,000 or more to a fund that Seed&Spark then distributes as $500 to $2,500 grants directly to projects that align with Patron values.
Eligibility
Seed&Spark is open to all independent filmmakers worldwide for crowdfunding campaigns. Tax-deductible contribution status is available for US-based filmmakers through fiscal sponsor partnerships. Grant rallies have varying eligibility requirements depending on the theme and sponsoring partner.
Who Should Apply / Use
Independent documentary and narrative filmmakers at any stage who want to raise money from their audience, access a filmmaker community, and eventually distribute their work through a platform built for independent cinema. Seed&Spark is particularly valuable for filmmakers whose projects have a defined audience base that can be activated for a crowdfunding campaign.
