SFFILM Catapult Documentary Fellowship
A $10,000 development fellowship from SFFILM and Catapult Film Fund for emerging documentary filmmakers working on their first or second feature, pairing a cash grant with a two-month FilmHouse residency.
Overview
The SFFILM Catapult Documentary Fellowship was a partnership between SFFILM and Catapult Film Fund, launched in 2018, supporting emerging documentary filmmakers in the early stages of development on feature-length documentary projects. The fellowship provided three inaugural fellows each year with a $10,000 cash grant alongside a two-month residency at FilmHouse -- SFFILM's dedicated filmmaker workspace in San Francisco -- and strategic development support.
The program was specifically aimed at emerging filmmakers: those who had directed short films previously and for whom the supported project represented their first feature documentary, or filmmakers whose first feature was complete but who were early in developing their second.
What It Provided
Selected fellows received:
- A $10,000 cash grant toward the development of their feature documentary
- A two-month residency at FilmHouse, SFFILM's San Francisco filmmaker workspace, providing dedicated space and time for focused development work
- Strategic development support from both SFFILM and Catapult Film Fund staff, drawing on the two organisations' combined expertise in documentary development and financing
- Access to SFFILM's professional network including potential co-producers, advisors, and distribution contacts
The residency component was a distinguishing feature. Rather than simply providing money, the fellowship created conditions -- time, space, community -- for meaningful early-stage development to occur.
Current Status
The SFFILM Catapult Documentary Fellowship is listed among SFFILM's previous grant programs, indicating it ran for a defined period from 2018 to 2019 and is no longer accepting new applications in this form. Catapult Film Fund continues to operate its own development grant programs independently. Filmmakers interested in either organisation's current offerings should check their respective websites.
Who Applied
Emerging documentary filmmakers -- those who had completed short films and were developing their first or second feature documentary -- with a project in the early stages of development that would benefit from both dedicated development funding and the structured support of a residency environment.
