SFFILM Vulcan Productions Environmental Fellowship
A $25,000 fellowship from SFFILM and Vulcan Productions supporting mid-career documentary filmmakers telling powerful stories about the environment and conservation.
Overview
The SFFILM Vulcan Productions Environmental Fellowship was launched in 2018 as a partnership between SFFILM (formerly the San Francisco Film Society) and Vulcan Productions, the production company founded by the late Paul G. Allen with a track record of supporting environmental and social impact documentaries including Racing Extinction and Step.
The fellowship provides $25,000 in grant funding to mid-career documentary filmmakers working on films about the environment and conservation. In addition to the cash grant, fellows receive an advisor with deep expertise in the specific environmental topic the film addresses, and access to SFFILM's professional development network and filmmaker community.
What It Provides
Selected fellows receive:
- A $25,000 cash grant toward the development or production of their environmental documentary
- A subject-matter advisor with professional expertise in the specific environmental or conservation topic the film explores, providing scientific, policy, or community context to strengthen the film's factual foundation
- Access to SFFILM's maker network and professional development programming, connecting fellows with other filmmakers, industry professionals, and potential collaborators
The advisor component is particularly significant. Environmental documentaries often engage with complex scientific, ecological, or policy subjects where filmmakers benefit from expert guidance that goes beyond standard editorial development support. By pairing each fellow with a relevant specialist, the fellowship helps ensure the film's treatment of its subject is accurate, nuanced, and informed.
Eligibility
The fellowship targets mid-career documentary filmmakers -- those who have established a professional track record but are not yet at the level where major studio or broadcaster deals are easily accessible. Projects must address environmental or conservation themes in a substantive way.
The program was launched in 2018. SFFILM has noted it as a previous grant program on its website, indicating that the fellowship may no longer be accepting new applications in its original form. Filmmakers interested in SFFILM's current environmental funding should check the SFFILM website directly for successor programs.
Who Should Apply / Applied
Mid-career documentary filmmakers with a project about the environment or conservation at the development or early production stage who want both financial support and expert subject-matter guidance. The fellowship was specifically designed for filmmakers whose environmental storytelling would benefit from direct access to domain expertise alongside funding.
