Women In Film Production Program

Overview

The Women In Film (WIF) Production Program is a Los Angeles-based initiative that funds and mentors emerging women creators through the production of short narrative content. Writers, directors, creative producers, and line producers accepted into the program receive financial backing, practical production support, and expert guidance from development through completion. WIF crews the productions with its members, giving below-the-line women crew members paid credits alongside the above-the-line participants.

The program is funded in part by the Los Angeles Department of Cultural Affairs and the Los Angeles County Board of Supervisors through the Department of Arts and Culture. Completed films screen at a public showcase presented by WIF, giving filmmakers festival-ready work and industry visibility. The next application cycle opens in Fall 2026.

WIF has operated in Los Angeles since 1973. The Production Program is one of several career development initiatives the organization runs, alongside the WIF Finishing Fund (post-production grants), the WIF Fellowship program (year-long mentorship), and the Emerging Producers Program (a one-year producing course).

What It Provides

Selected participants receive:

• Production funding for short narrative content, with amounts determined by the program cycle and project scope
• Crew staffing from the WIF membership base, creating crews composed predominantly of women and gender-non-conforming professionals
• Mentorship from established directors, producers, and department heads who guide participants through development and production
• Equipment and production services accessed through WIF industry partnerships

Program Structure

The Production Program operates in stages:

1. Selection: Writers, directors, creative producers, and line producers apply and are selected based on their project and experience level
2. Development: Selected participants receive mentorship and guidance on script development, pre-production planning, and production design
3. Production: Films are shot with WIF-member crews, using equipment and services secured through WIF partnerships
4. Post-Production: Projects receive support through editing and finishing
5. Showcase: Completed films screen at a public WIF showcase event
6. Festival Circuit: Filmmakers receive guidance on festival submissions and distribution strategy

Eligibility

• Applicants must identify as women
• Open to writers, directors, creative producers, and line producers
• Projects must be short narrative content (the program does not currently fund documentary features or docuseries)
• The program is oriented toward Los Angeles-based filmmakers or those with a strong professional connection to the LA film community
• Physical production takes place in Los Angeles
• WIF membership is required or strongly recommended for participation

WIF Membership Costs

WIF membership operates on tiered annual rates. As of the 2026 member drive (through May 31, 2026):

Track Record and Alumni

Production Program alumnae have screened their completed shorts at major festivals including Sundance, Venice, Tribeca, SXSW, Hot Docs, and LA Shorts International. Specific alumni include:

• Laura Beckner (2020 grant recipient, writer/director): Her short films have won awards at festivals across the US and Europe and are curated as Vimeo Staff Picks and Short of the Week selections
• Chloé Hung (writer/director): Her short film SIGNAL received funding and mentorship through the program. She has since written for television series including Ava DuVernay's Cherish the Day and Queen Sugar on OWN

The program's combination of funding, crew, and mentorship means that participants leave with both a completed film and professional relationships that extend beyond the program cycle. WIF reports that crew members who staff Production Program shoots also benefit, gaining professional credits and on-set experience that advances their own careers.
