Overview

The CAMERAderie Initiative is Women in Media's flagship production program, designed to give women cinematographers and below-the-line crew hands-on experience by producing a cohort of short films together. Rather than awarding a cash grant, the initiative provides in-kind support: cameras, sound gear, lighting equipment, and access to professional training facilities, all contributed by Women in Media's vendor partners.

The program's name captures its dual purpose: it is simultaneously about cameras and the camaraderie of a community of women working together on set. Each cycle produces three short films, with the completed films screened at a dedicated event for the Women in Media community.

What It Provides

CAMERAderie participants receive:

  • Camera and production equipment donated by vendor partners, including cameras, sound gear, and lighting
  • MBS Grip, Electric, and Art Department training in partnership with production facilities
  • Set experience working on actual short film productions in a structured crew environment
  • Mentorship from established women cinematographers and industry professionals serving as advisors and instructors
  • Networking with Women in Media's broader professional community, including directors, producers, and technical crew members
  • Screening and recognition of completed films at a Women in Media event

The program is distinguished from a conventional grant by its emphasis on production experience rather than cash. For women cinematographers and crew who have technical training but limited set credits, CAMERAderie provides the practical experience that professional credits require.

Eligibility

Participants must be Women in Media VIP or Student Members in good standing with a WiM Crew Profile. Writers Group Members receive early submission access. The program is Los Angeles-based and requires in-person participation during production.

The program is specifically for women -- including cisgender women, transgender women, and non-binary individuals who identify with the program's mission -- working in cinematography and below-the-line crew roles.

Who Should Apply

Women cinematographers and below-the-line crew members in Los Angeles who want hands-on set experience, professional equipment access, and connection to an active community of women working in film and television production. The program is most valuable for those who have technical training but need production credits to advance their careers.
