BAFTA Breakthrough UK

Overview

BAFTA Breakthrough UK is the British Academy of Film and Television Arts' flagship talent development program, supported by Netflix. Now in its 13th year (2026), the program selects 20 emerging creative practitioners in film, games, and television who are at a "breakthrough" moment in their careers. The program is not a cash prize or scholarship. It is a career development initiative that provides mentorship, industry access, and professional networking over a one-year period.

BAFTA Breakthrough has championed over 330 creatives to date. Alumni include actors Letitia Wright, Florence Pugh, Josh O'Connor, Jessie Buckley, Paapa Essiedu, and Bella Ramsey; directors Destiny Ekaragha, Michael Pearce, and Raine Allen-Miller; composer Segun Akinola; and screenwriters Laurie Nunn and Charlie Covell. Many alumni have gone on to receive BAFTA nominations and wins.

Netflix has been the main supporter of the program since 2020 and has confirmed continued support through 2028. The 2026 cycle marks the seventh year of the Netflix partnership. Globally, over 330 people have passed through the BAFTA Breakthrough program, including participants from the UK and US programs.

History

BAFTA Breakthrough was launched in 2013 as "Breakthrough Brits," initially supported by Burberry. The program was created to identify and support emerging British talent across film, television, and games at a critical career stage. In 2020, Netflix became the principal supporter, and the program was rebranded as BAFTA Breakthrough. The Netflix partnership was extended through 2028. In 2023, BAFTA launched a parallel Breakthrough US program, supported by Apple TV+. Over 12 years, the program has arranged 1,500+ one-to-one meetings between participants and established practitioners, including Cillian Murphy, Emma Thompson, Danny Boyle, Jesse Armstrong, and Martin McDonagh. The 2025 UK cohort included 20 participants, among them Grand Theft Hamlet co-director Pinny Grylls and My Father's Shadow director Akinola Davies Jr.

Award Value

BAFTA Breakthrough UK provides a non-cash package of career development support:

• Mentorship meetings: BAFTA curates one-to-one meetings with established practitioners from its global academy of 12,500 creatives. Over 1,500 meetings have been arranged to date.
• Industry networking: Participants join a peer-to-peer network of current and former Breakthrough alumni across film, games, and television.
• BAFTA access: Participants receive access to BAFTA events, screenings, masterclasses, and the broader BAFTA community.
• Public recognition: The annual Breakthrough cohort is announced publicly, providing industry visibility and a recognized credential.
• Career development support: The program aims to leverage early success into sustainable careers, with attention to practitioners from underrepresented groups.

No cash prize, stipend, tuition credit, or cost-of-living component is provided. The value is entirely in access and connections.

Eligibility

To be eligible for BAFTA Breakthrough UK, applicants must meet all of the following criteria:

• Be aged 18 or over
• Be working in the UK
• Have been primarily residing in the UK
• Have a professional credit on a piece of work released in the UK between June 1, 2024 and September 1, 2025 (or reasonably expected to be released by that date)
• Have a lead or impactful role on their Breakthrough project

BAFTA recognizes that applicants from underrepresented groups may not have had the same access to lead roles. The program accepts applications from candidates from underrepresented groups (as identified in the BFI Diversity Standards) who have taken on a lead or impactful role in any discipline.

The program covers directors, writers, producers, editors, cinematographers, composers, production designers, sound designers, animators, game developers, and other screen disciplines. There is no school enrollment requirement. Selection is open-application with industry panel review.

What Made Their Application Stand Out

BAFTA Breakthrough selects through industry panels, not a public voting body. What tends to advance:

• A professional credit that demonstrates a lead or impactful role, not just participation. The eligibility requirement is a professional credit on a UK-released project. Selected participants have credits where their specific contribution is visible and significant, not just crew list appearances.
• A personal statement that articulates a specific breakthrough moment. The program targets people at a career inflection point, not beginners. Strong applications describe what has changed in the applicant's career recently and what they need to move to the next level.
• For underrepresented group applicants: evidence of a lead role despite systemic barriers. BAFTA accepts applications from underrepresented candidates who have taken on lead roles in any discipline, recognizing that access to lead roles has not been equal.

Renewal Requirements

BAFTA Breakthrough is a one-time, one-year program. Participants attend the program once. There is no mechanism to renew or repeat the Breakthrough experience. There is no GPA, enrollment, or progress milestone requirement because the program is not tied to an academic institution.

After completing the program, participants join the Breakthrough alumni network permanently. Alumni can attend BAFTA events and maintain connections made during their Breakthrough year. There is no reapplication process for the same program, but alumni can engage with other BAFTA initiatives over time.

Application Process

Applications are submitted through the BAFTA Breakthrough page. The 2026 cycle deadline is 12:00 PM on Friday, June 19, 2026.

The application requires:

• Personal statement outlining the applicant's breakthrough moment and career goals
• Evidence of a professional credit on an eligible project (released in the UK between June 1, 2024 and September 1, 2025)
• Details of the applicant's role on the project
• CV or professional history
• For underrepresented group applicants: details of how the applicant meets the BFI Diversity Standards criteria

Selection is made by industry panels. The 2026 cohort will be announced in November 2026. There is no application fee.

What Filmmakers Should Know

BAFTA Breakthrough does not provide cash funding. Filmmakers who need production funding should look elsewhere. The value of the program is in access and connections. For an emerging filmmaker, the difference between having a BAFTA-arranged meeting with an established director or showrunner and trying to get that same meeting through cold emails is significant. The program functions as a curated introduction service backed by BAFTA's institutional credibility.

The key trade-off is that the credential only carries weight in the UK industry. BAFTA recognition is widely understood and respected in the UK, but it may not translate directly to US or international markets. The 20-person cohort size means the program is selective. BAFTA does not publish the exact number of applications, but the program is described as highly competitive. The program is UK-only. BAFTA's North American operations run a separate Breakthrough US program supported by Apple TV+, but there is no combined application. Applicants must have a professional credit on a UK-released project, which means this program is not for students or people with no professional experience.
