Firelight Media Documentary Lab

A fellowship program supporting documentary filmmakers of color through mentorship, funding, and creative development for feature-length nonfiction projects.

Overview

Firelight Media is a nonprofit production company and artist support organization founded by documentary filmmaker Stanley Nelson. The Firelight Documentary Lab is a fellowship program that provides emerging documentary filmmakers of color with financial support, creative mentorship, and professional development over an 18-month period as they develop their feature-length documentary projects.

Stanley Nelson is one of the most acclaimed documentary filmmakers in the United States, with films including Freedom Riders, The Black Panthers: Vanguard of the Revolution, and Miles Davis: Birth of the Cool. Firelight Media extends his commitment to nonfiction storytelling by investing in the next generation of documentary voices, with a specific focus on filmmakers of color whose perspectives are underrepresented in the documentary field.

The Documentary Lab has supported dozens of filmmakers whose projects have gone on to premiere at Sundance, Tribeca, SXSW, and other major festivals. The program's combination of financial support, sustained mentorship, and community connection addresses the specific challenges that filmmakers of color face in accessing the documentary funding ecosystem.
