Sundance Ignite Fellowship
A program from the Sundance Institute supporting emerging filmmakers aged 18 to 25 with mentorship, industry access, and participation in the Sundance Film Festival.
Overview
Sundance Ignite is a program of the Sundance Institute designed to support the next generation of independent filmmakers. The fellowship targets young creators aged 18 to 25 who are passionate about storytelling and have demonstrated early promise in filmmaking. Ignite fellows receive mentorship from established filmmakers, access to the Sundance Film Festival, and ongoing support from the Sundance Institute community.
The Sundance Institute has been the most important incubator for American independent cinema since its founding in 1981 by Robert Redford. The Ignite program extends this mission to the earliest stages of a filmmaker's development, providing young creators with exposure to the independent film ecosystem before they have completed formal education or produced professional work.
Ignite fellows attend the Sundance Film Festival, participate in workshops and panels, and connect with filmmakers, producers, and industry professionals. The program also includes year-round mentorship and creative development support that continues beyond the festival experience.
What It Covers
- Sundance Film Festival access -- fellows attend the festival with curated programming, screenings, and industry events
- Travel and accommodation support -- the program covers expenses associated with festival attendance
- Mentorship -- fellows are paired with established filmmakers who provide creative guidance and career advice
- Community membership -- fellows join the broader Sundance Institute community of artists and alumni
- Workshops and panels -- structured learning opportunities with industry professionals during and beyond the festival
Eligibility
Applicants must be between 18 and 25 years old. The program seeks emerging filmmakers who have demonstrated a commitment to storytelling through short films, web series, or other creative work. Applicants do not need to be enrolled in a film school or have formal film education. The program values diverse perspectives and actively seeks applicants from underrepresented communities.
How to Apply
Applications are submitted through the Sundance Institute's online portal. The application typically includes a personal statement, a sample of creative work (a short film or other visual storytelling project), and information about the applicant's creative goals. There is no application fee. The selection process considers artistic potential, creative voice, and alignment with the program's mission.
Who Should Apply
Young filmmakers aged 18 to 25 who are passionate about independent storytelling and want to connect with the Sundance community. The program is particularly valuable for filmmakers who may not have access to established industry networks through their school or personal connections. Applicants from underrepresented backgrounds are encouraged.
