YoungArts Film Award

A national arts competition for high school students aged 15 to 18, awarding cash prizes and mentorship opportunities in film through the National YoungArts Foundation.

Overview

The National YoungArts Foundation identifies and supports the most accomplished young artists in the United States through a competitive application process across ten artistic disciplines, including film. YoungArts Film recognizes high school students who demonstrate exceptional talent in filmmaking, providing cash awards, professional development opportunities, and access to a lifelong community of artists.

Founded in 1981 by Lin and Ted Arison, the foundation has supported over 25,000 alumni across all disciplines. YoungArts alumni in film and related fields include Timothee Chalamet, Kerry Washington, Viola Davis, and numerous working directors, writers, and producers. The program serves as an early career launchpad, identifying talent before college and connecting young artists with mentors, resources, and peer communities.

YoungArts winners participate in an intensive week-long program in Miami that includes masterclasses, performances, exhibitions, and mentorship sessions with established professionals. The experience builds creative confidence and professional networks at a formative stage of artistic development.

What It Covers

  • Cash awards ranging from $250 to $10,000 based on merit level (Finalist, Honorable Mention, Merit)
  • YoungArts Week -- an intensive residency program in Miami with masterclasses and mentorship
  • Nomination for US Presidential Scholar in the Arts -- the nation's highest honor for high school arts students
  • Lifelong alumni network -- access to professional development, grants, and community through the YoungArts Post program

Eligibility

Applicants must be US citizens or permanent residents between the ages of 15 and 18, or in grades 10 through 12. Applicants in the Film category submit a short film (typically under 10 minutes) that demonstrates directorial vision, technical competence, and storytelling ability. The film must be substantially the work of the applicant.

How to Apply

Applications are submitted through the YoungArts online portal. The submission window opens in the summer with a deadline typically in October. Applicants submit their film along with an artist statement and basic biographical information. There is a modest application fee, with fee waivers available for students who demonstrate financial need.

Who Should Apply

High school students aged 15 to 18 who are passionate about filmmaking and have produced short films that demonstrate genuine talent. The competition rewards artistic vision, technical skill, and storytelling ability. Students who plan to pursue film studies in college will find that a YoungArts recognition significantly strengthens their applications.
