National Film and Television School (NFTS)
The UK's premier film school, located outside London, consistently ranked among the top film schools in the world with deep ties to the British and international film industries.
Overview
The National Film and Television School (NFTS) is widely regarded as one of the finest film schools in the world. Located in Beaconsfield, Buckinghamshire, approximately 25 miles west of central London, the NFTS has been named the top international film school by The Hollywood Reporter for over a decade running. The school operates as a postgraduate conservatory, training students across the full range of filmmaking disciplines in a collaborative, production-driven environment.
The NFTS was established with government support and continues to receive funding from the UK's Department for Culture, Media and Sport, supplemented by commercial income and industry partnerships. The school's ties to the British film and television industries are exceptionally strong, with organizations including the BBC, Channel 4, Sony Pictures Television, and the Dana and Albert R. Broccoli Foundation maintaining active relationships with the school.
The campus includes soundstages, post-production suites, a dubbing theatre, animation studios, and screening rooms. In recent years, the UK government committed an additional 10 million pounds toward campus expansion. The school's facilities and industry connections create a bridge between education and professional production that few schools can match.

What Students Should Know
The NFTS is a postgraduate school. There are no undergraduate programs. Most MA programs run for two years, and admission requires either a relevant undergraduate degree or demonstrable professional experience. The school admits small cohorts, typically 8 to 12 students per discipline, which ensures close mentorship and generous access to equipment and facilities.
The NFTS model mirrors professional production. Students from different disciplines collaborate on films, with directing students working alongside cinematographers, editors, sound designers, and producers, replicating the crew structures of professional productions. This collaborative approach is central to the school's identity and produces graduates who are prepared for the realities of working in teams.
Tuition for UK and EU students has historically been subsidized, though fees have increased following Brexit. International tuition varies by program but typically ranges from 15,000 to 30,000 pounds per year. The school offers bursaries and scholarships, and many students receive financial support through industry-funded programs.
The NFTS campus is not in London, which can feel isolating for students accustomed to urban environments. However, the school's proximity to Pinewood Studios and other production facilities in the Beaconsfield area provides access to the heart of the British film production infrastructure.
Notable Alumni
NFTS alumni include Roger Deakins (cinematographer of 1917, Blade Runner 2049, No Country for Old Men), David Yates (director of the Harry Potter and Fantastic Beasts films), Lynne Ramsay (director of We Need to Talk About Kevin), Nick Park (creator of Wallace and Gromit), and numerous BAFTA and Oscar winners across all disciplines.
