National School of Drama (NSD)
India's premier theater and performance school in New Delhi, training actors and directors whose work spans stage, film, and television across the country's entertainment industries.
Overview
The National School of Drama (NSD) is India's foremost institution for theater training, located in New Delhi. While NSD is primarily a theater school rather than a film school, its graduates have profoundly shaped Indian cinema, with many of the country's most acclaimed screen actors and directors having trained at the institution. NSD's rigorous approach to performance, text analysis, and directorial craft produces artists whose skills transfer seamlessly to film and television.
Founded in 1959 by Sangeet Natak Akademi (India's national academy for music, dance, and drama), NSD operates a three-year postgraduate diploma program that is widely considered the most competitive performing arts program in the country. The school's alumni dominate Indian theater and occupy prominent positions in Bollywood and India's regional film industries.
NSD's campus in Mandi House, the cultural heart of New Delhi, places students in the center of India's theater community. The school operates its own repertory company, which provides graduates with professional performance opportunities immediately after completing their training.
Programs Offered
- Postgraduate Diploma in Dramatic Arts -- a three-year intensive program covering acting, directing, design, and theater technology
- Specializations in Acting, Directing, and Design -- students choose a concentration within the diploma program
- Extension programs and workshops -- shorter programs in specific theater and performance disciplines
What Students Should Know
NSD teaches in Hindi, and proficiency is required. The school admits approximately 25 students per year from thousands of applicants, making it one of the most selective arts programs in India. The admissions process includes written examinations, auditions, and interviews.
NSD is a theater school, not a film school. Students who want to work exclusively in film should consider FTII or other dedicated film programs. However, NSD's training in performance craft, text interpretation, and directorial vision provides a foundation that many of India's finest screen artists consider essential to their work.
Tuition at NSD is nominal, reflecting its government funding. The school provides residential accommodation on campus, and students receive stipends to cover living expenses. This makes NSD one of the most financially accessible elite arts programs in the world.
The school's alumni network extends across Indian theater, film, and television. NSD graduates support each other throughout their careers, and the school's credential is respected across all segments of the Indian entertainment industry.
Notable Alumni
NSD alumni include Naseeruddin Shah (one of India's most respected actors), Om Puri (actor in East Is East and numerous Bollywood films), Anupam Kher (actor in Silver Linings Playbook and A Wednesday), Irrfan Khan (actor in Life of Pi and The Lunchbox), Pankaj Kapur (actor and director), Raghubir Yadav (actor in Lagaan), and Nawazuddin Siddiqui (who later also studied at FTII).
