Overview
Toronto Film School (TFS) is a private career college in downtown Toronto offering accelerated diploma programs in film and television production, screenwriting, acting, video game design, and graphic design. Film and Television Production:
- Film and TV Production Diploma - 18 months, on campus. Covers directing, cinematography, editing, sound, and producing. Students shoot projects throughout the program using Sony professional cameras and Aputure lighting. Capstone: edit a short film including motion graphics, VFX, and sound design.
- Video Production Diploma - 24 months, 100% online, self-paced. Students use their own camera gear and software. Capstone: write, produce, and edit an original film.
Screenwriting:
- Writing for Film and Television Diploma - 18 months, on campus with flexible, remote, and hybrid options. Taught by working writers. Capstone: audition, cast, and run a table read of your script.
- Screenwriting Online - 24 months, 100% online, self-paced.
Acting:
- Acting for Film, TV and Theatre Diploma - 18 months, on campus. Graduates are eligible for their first credit toward ACTRA membership.

Facilities and Equipment
TFS operates from a studio campus in downtown Toronto with industry-grade cameras, lenses, audio, and lighting equipment. Through a $2.5 million collaboration with Sony of Canada announced in July 2024, TFS acquired 50 new Sony professional cameras plus Sony student camera packs with Aputure LED light technology. Sony also provides hands-on training from Sony experts and participates in quarterly workshops, masterclasses, and panel talks at the campus.
TFS maintains five main equipment package tiers available to Film and TV Production students:

TFS Greenlit Productions are select student films, approximately 10 per semester and 40 per year, chosen by a TFS jury from student pitches. Greenlit films receive a full production package delivered to set by rental house Canada Film Equipment (CFE). The package includes:
- ARRI Alexa Mini with lens kit, follow-focus, and director monitor
- Full grip and lighting package: Aputure LED lights, Lite Mats, dolly, flags, c-stands, Matthews grip
- Full Sennheiser wireless and Zoom sound recorders
- Equipment delivery service with driver
- Lighting and camera technicians

TFS is eligible for OSAP (Ontario Student Assistance Program) and select provincial funding for on-campus programs. Online self-paced programs are not OSAP-eligible.
BMO BIPOC Bursary: Beginning with the 2026 cycle, four students enrolled full-time in any on-campus program receive tuition credits valued at $2,000 each, awarded quarterly. Requirements: application essay, two faculty references, minimum GPA of 3.5. This bursary is open to Black, Indigenous, and People of Colour creatives.

TFS has been named to MovieMaker Magazine's "30 Best Film Schools in the U.S. and Canada" for six consecutive years. The school was included in The Hollywood Reporter's 2025 list of Best International Film Schools. TFS has been an official partner of the Toronto International Film Festival (TIFF) since 2023, giving students access to TIFF screenings and networking events. What Students Should Know
TFS is a career-focused institution, not a university. The school prioritizes practical skills and industry readiness over academic breadth. Students produce projects from the first term and graduate with a professional portfolio in 12 to 24 months. This approach suits students who want to enter the workforce quickly in technical production roles.
TFS awards diplomas, not degrees. The Bachelor of Creative Arts (BCA) is available through a separate pathway with Yorkville University. Students should verify that the credentials meet their specific requirements for employment, immigration, or further study. International students should confirm that the diploma qualifies for post-graduation work permits under current Canadian immigration rules.
The 18-month accelerated timeline means the program is intensive. Students are in class and on sets regularly, with less flexibility than a four-year degree. The tradeoff is faster entry into the workforce and lower total tuition than most university film programs.
