Overview

Barrandov Studios is the largest and most historically significant film production facility in the Czech Republic. Located on a hillside in the Barrandov district of Prague, the studio has operated since 1933 and served as the production base for Czech, German, and international cinema across nine decades. The facility's combination of large sound stages, skilled Czech crews, competitive labor costs, and proximity to Prague's architecturally diverse cityscape has made it one of the most sought-after European production destinations for Hollywood and international films.

The studio complex covers approximately 90 acres and includes 14 sound stages, extensive backlots, post-production facilities, and production support infrastructure. Barrandov operates as a commercial rental facility alongside a production services company that supports international shoots throughout the Czech Republic.

History

Vaclav Havel (grandfather of the future Czech president) and Milos Havel built Barrandov Studios in 1931-1933, envisioning a modern production facility that could serve as the center of Czechoslovak cinema. The studio was named after the Barrandov neighborhood, itself named after 19th-century paleontologist Joachim Barrande.

During World War II, the occupying Nazi regime used Barrandov for German-language film production. After the war, the studio became the primary production facility for nationalized Czechoslovak cinema, producing the films of the Czech New Wave in the 1960s, including work by Milos Forman, Jiri Menzel, and Vera Chytilova. The state-run studio system provided stable funding and infrastructure that enabled one of the most creatively productive periods in European cinema history.

After the Velvet Revolution of 1989, Barrandov was privatized and opened to international productions. The Czech Republic's combination of production incentives, skilled crews, lower costs, and Prague's architectural versatility attracted a wave of Hollywood productions starting in the mid-1990s.

Major international productions at Barrandov include Mission: Impossible (1996), The Bourne Identity (2002), Casino Royale (2006), The Chronicles of Narnia: The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe (2005), The Illusionist (2006), Wanted (2008), Snowpiercer (2013), and Knives Out: Glass Onion (2022).

What Filmmakers Should Know

The Czech Republic offers a film production incentive of 20% on qualifying Czech expenditure (with a possible additional 10% for qualifying above-the-line expenditure). Combined with Barrandov's facilities and Prague's production infrastructure, this incentive makes the Czech Republic one of the most cost-effective European production destinations.

Prague's architectural diversity allows the city to double for period London, Paris, Berlin, Vienna, Moscow, and numerous other European settings. This versatility, combined with Barrandov's stage capacity, means productions can combine location shooting and studio work within a single production base.

Barrandov's production services division assists international productions with local crew hiring, equipment rental, location scouting, and logistical coordination throughout the Czech Republic.
