CJ ENM (CJ Entertainment)
South Korea's largest entertainment conglomerate, the company behind Parasite, Snowpiercer, and the global expansion of Korean cinema. Operates production, distribution, and exhibition across Asia.
Overview
CJ ENM is South Korea's largest entertainment company, operating across film production, distribution, exhibition, music, and broadcasting. The company's film division, CJ Entertainment, has been instrumental in the global rise of Korean cinema, producing and distributing many of the most significant Korean films of the 21st century. CJ ENM is a subsidiary of CJ Group, one of South Korea's major conglomerates.
CJ Entertainment operates the largest cinema chain in South Korea (CGV, with over 500 screens domestically and additional locations across Asia and globally) and produces approximately 15 to 20 films per year. The company's vertically integrated model, combining production, distribution, and exhibition, gives it dominant market power within the Korean film industry.
History
CJ Entertainment was established in 1995 as a film investment and distribution company. The company quickly became the leading distributor in South Korea and expanded into production. CJ's early investments in Korean cinema coincided with the Korean Wave (Hallyu), and the company both benefited from and accelerated the global expansion of Korean cultural content.
CJ Entertainment produced and distributed landmark Korean films including Park Chan-wook's Oldboy (2003), Memories of Murder (2003), The Host (2006), Snowpiercer (2013), The Handmaiden (2016), Along with the Gods (2017-2018), and most significantly, Bong Joon-ho's Parasite (2019), which won the Palme d'Or and the Academy Award for Best Picture.
The company also operates the Busan International Film Festival's primary venue (the Busan Cinema Center) and sponsors numerous Korean film industry initiatives. CJ ENM's expansion into music (through Mnet and music production) and broadcasting has made it the most diversified entertainment company in Korea.
