Dharma Productions

One of India's most successful film production companies, founded by Yash Johar. Behind Kabhi Khushi Kabhie Gham, Kuch Kuch Hota Hai, Dunki, and dozens of major Bollywood productions.

Overview

Dharma Productions is one of India's most commercially successful and creatively influential film production companies. Founded in 1979 by Yash Johar and now led by his son Karan Johar, the company has produced many of the biggest Bollywood blockbusters of the past three decades. Dharma is synonymous with lavish, emotionally opulent Hindi-language cinema that blends romance, family drama, and spectacle into a distinctive house style.

The company operates from Mumbai and produces approximately 3 to 6 films per year, distributing through Dharma's own distribution network and through partnerships with major Bollywood distributors. Dharma also operates a digital content arm, Dharmatic Entertainment, producing original series for Netflix and other streaming platforms.

History

Yash Johar founded Dharma Productions in 1979 and established the company's identity over the following two decades with melodramas and family entertainers. The company's trajectory changed when Karan Johar, Yash's son, emerged as a filmmaker of massive commercial significance. Karan Johar's directorial debut Kuch Kuch Hota Hai (1998) became one of the highest-grossing Bollywood films of its era and established the template for Dharma's modern output: emotionally intense family dramas with gorgeous production design, major stars, and music that penetrated popular culture.

Key Dharma productions include Kuch Kuch Hota Hai (1998), Kabhi Khushi Kabhie Gham (2001), Kal Ho Naa Ho (2003), Kabhi Alvida Naa Kehna (2006), My Name Is Khan (2010), Student of the Year (2012), 2 States (2014), Dil Dhadakne Do (2015), Ae Dil Hai Mushkil (2016), Raazi (2018), Good Newwz (2019), Brahmastra: Part One (2022), and Dunki (2023, starring Shah Rukh Khan).

Karan Johar's position as both director and producer, combined with his hosting of the long-running celebrity talk show Koffee with Karan, has made him one of the most influential figures in the Hindi film industry.

What Filmmakers Should Know

Dharma Productions develops projects primarily in-house and through relationships with established Bollywood directors, writers, and stars. The company's scale and distribution network make it a significant presence in the domestic Indian theatrical market. For international filmmakers interested in Bollywood co-production, Dharma's mainstream commercial identity positions it toward broad popular entertainment rather than arthouse or festival-oriented content.

Dharmatic Entertainment's streaming operations represent an additional content development pathway for digital-first projects targeted at younger Indian audiences.
