Overview

Ealing Studios holds the Guinness World Record as the oldest continuously working film studio in the world. Located in the west London suburb of Ealing, the studio has been in operation since 1902, predating Hollywood itself. The facility is best known for the Ealing comedies of the late 1940s and 1950s, a series of witty, distinctly British films that defined a genre and remain culturally influential.

Today, Ealing Studios operates as a boutique production facility offering sound stages, production offices, and post-production services. The studio's intimate scale and London location make it attractive to independent productions, television series, and commercial shoots that do not require the massive stages of Pinewood or Shepperton.

History

Will Barker built the first studio on the Ealing site in 1902. The facility changed hands several times before Basil Dean established Associated Talking Pictures there in 1931. Michael Balcon took over as head of production in 1938 and transformed Ealing into the most creatively distinctive studio in British cinema.

Under Balcon's leadership, Ealing produced a remarkable series of comedies that captured the spirit of postwar Britain: Passport to Pimlico (1949), Whisky Galore! (1949), Kind Hearts and Coronets (1949), The Lavender Hill Mob (1951), The Man in the White Suit (1951), and The Ladykillers (1955). These films shared a sensibility that combined gentle satire, eccentric characters, and an affection for British institutions that was simultaneously warm and subversive.

The BBC purchased the studio in 1955, and it served as a television production facility for decades. In 2000, the studio returned to film production under new ownership, and it has since hosted features, television series, and commercials while preserving its historic character.

What Filmmakers Should Know

Ealing Studios caters to productions that benefit from a London location and an intimate, well-equipped facility. The studio is particularly suited to television drama, independent features, and commercial productions. The historic setting and smaller scale create a collaborative atmosphere that differs from larger industrial facilities.

The studio's location within London's transport network makes it accessible to the deep pool of London-based crew, cast, and post-production services. For international productions shooting in London, Ealing offers a self-contained facility without the travel time required to reach facilities outside the M25.
