Overview

Entertainment One (eOne) is a major independent entertainment company that distributes and produces film and television content across North America, Europe, and beyond. Founded in Canada, the company grew through aggressive acquisitions into one of the largest independent distributors outside the major studio system. Hasbro acquired eOne in 2019, adding the company's film and television operations and its library of titles to the toy company's entertainment ambitions. The film and television library was subsequently sold to Lionsgate in 2023.

At its peak, eOne distributed approximately 200 to 300 films per year across its various territories, making it one of the most prolific independent distributors in the world.

History

Entertainment One was founded in 2003 through the merger of several Canadian entertainment companies. The company expanded rapidly through acquisitions of distribution companies across the UK, Benelux, Australia, and other markets, building a pan-territorial distribution infrastructure that gave it scale comparable to major studio specialty divisions.

eOne's film division distributed a broad range of content: wide-release commercial films in Canada and the UK, independent acquisitions, and its own productions. Key releases include The King's Speech (2010, Canadian distribution), Hell or High Water (2016), Spotlight (2015, Canadian distribution), The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel (2011), Unbroken (2014, UK distribution), and hundreds of other titles across all genres.

The company also owned the Peppa Pig and PJ Masks children's properties, which drove the Hasbro acquisition and represented the core commercial rationale for the deal. Following the Hasbro acquisition, eOne's film and television library and operations were carved out and sold to Lionsgate for approximately $500 million in 2023.

What Filmmakers Should Know

eOne's film distribution operations now operate within the Lionsgate structure. For Canadian filmmakers specifically, eOne's legacy as the dominant independent Canadian distributor reflects the importance of territorial distribution deals in the independent film market. Many films distributed by eOne in Canada were handled by different companies in other territories, illustrating the territory-by-territory nature of independent distribution.
