Focus Features
NBCUniversal's specialty films label distributing independent and international films in the US. Behind Brokeback Mountain, Lost in Translation, Darkest Hour, and scores of acclaimed acquisitions.
Overview
Focus Features is the specialty films division of Universal Pictures, dedicated to producing, acquiring, and distributing independent and international films for the North American market. Since its formation in 2002, Focus has built one of the strongest specialty catalogs in the industry, consistently delivering critically acclaimed films that perform across theatrical, awards, and home entertainment windows.
Focus operates semi-autonomously within the NBCUniversal structure, maintaining its own development, acquisition, and marketing teams. The label's ability to combine specialty-film expertise with Universal's global distribution infrastructure gives it a significant competitive advantage over purely independent distributors.
History
Focus Features was formed in 2002 from the merger of USA Films, Good Machine, and Gramercy Pictures, all specialty labels that had been operating under the Universal umbrella. The consolidated entity quickly established itself as a major force in independent film distribution.
The label's filmography includes Lost in Translation (2003), Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind (2004), Brokeback Mountain (2005), Atonement (2007), Milk (2008), The Kids Are All Right (2010), Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy (2011), Dallas Buyers Club (2013), The Theory of Everything (2014), Suffragette (2015), Darkest Hour (2017), BlacKkKlansman (2018), Promising Young Woman (2020), Belfast (2021), Tar (2022), and The Holdovers (2023).
Focus also operates Focus World, a label for smaller acquisitions targeting digital and limited theatrical release, and maintains long-standing production relationships with Working Title Films (also a Universal subsidiary) and other producer partners.
What Filmmakers Should Know
Focus Features acquires completed films from major festivals and develops projects from script stage. The label evaluates projects based on directorial vision, awards potential, and commercial viability within the specialty market. Focus is one of the most active buyers at Sundance, Cannes, Venice, and Toronto, and its acquisition team maintains relationships with major sales agents and talent agencies.
For independent filmmakers, Focus represents a distribution partner that provides studio-level marketing and release resources applied with specialty-film sensibility. The label's Universal parentage means theatrical releases receive support across Universal's domestic exhibition relationships.
