GKIDS
Leading US distributor of animated feature films from around the world, including the Studio Ghibli catalog, Wolfwalkers, The Breadwinner, and dozens of acclaimed international animation titles.
Overview
GKIDS is the leading US distributor of international animated feature films. Founded in 2008, the company has built a catalog of acclaimed animated titles from Europe, Asia, and the Americas, most notably holding the North American distribution rights to the Studio Ghibli library. GKIDS releases approximately 8 to 12 animated features per year theatrically and maintains a robust home entertainment operation including premium physical media releases.
The company operates from New York and has established itself as the definitive US home for animated cinema that exists outside the mainstream Hollywood studio animation system. GKIDS films have earned 12 Academy Award nominations for Best Animated Feature, more than any other distributor outside the major studios.
History
Eric Beckman and David Jesteadt founded GKIDS in 2008 with a focus on high-quality animated films for family audiences that offered an alternative to the dominant computer-animated Hollywood model. The company's early releases included the NHK World Masterpiece Theater series of classic literary adaptations.
GKIDS's profile rose significantly when it acquired the North American distribution rights to the Studio Ghibli catalog from Disney in 2017. This deal brought the complete Ghibli library, including My Neighbor Totoro, Spirited Away, Princess Mononoke, and all other Ghibli features, under GKIDS management for theatrical re-releases, home video, and special editions.
Beyond Ghibli, GKIDS has distributed The Secret of Kells (2009), A Cat in Paris (2011), Ernest and Celestine (2012), The Tale of the Princess Kaguya (2013), The Red Turtle (2016), The Breadwinner (2017), Mirai (2018), I Lost My Body (2019), Wolfwalkers (2020), The Mitchells vs. the Machines (2021, domestic streaming), Inu-Oh (2022), and The Boy and the Heron (2023).
Home Entertainment
GKIDS produces premium physical media releases of its catalog titles, often including newly commissioned bonus materials, illustrated packaging, and high-quality transfers. These releases are sought after by collectors and animation enthusiasts, and represent a significant revenue stream alongside theatrical distribution.
The company's Blu-ray and 4K UHD releases of Studio Ghibli films are particularly celebrated for their presentation quality and collector-focused packaging.
What Filmmakers Should Know
GKIDS acquires animated features from international festivals and through sales agent relationships, with a focus on films that prioritize artistry, distinctive visual styles, and storytelling depth. The company is particularly active at the Annecy International Animation Film Festival, which serves as the primary market for animated feature acquisitions.
For animation filmmakers and studios outside the Hollywood system, GKIDS represents the most significant US distribution partner for non-mainstream animated content. The company's expertise in marketing animation to both family and adult audiences gives it capabilities that general independent distributors lack.
