Overview

Icon Film Distribution is an independent film production and distribution company founded by Mel Gibson and Bruce Davey. The company operates across production, international sales, and distribution in the UK and Australia/New Zealand markets. Icon Productions, the US-based production arm, is run from Santa Monica by Vicki Christianson.

The Dendy Icon Group, still owned by Gibson and Davey, comprises Icon Productions, Icon Film Distribution, Dendy Cinemas, and Icon Film Finance. History

Gibson and Davey established Icon Entertainment International in 1989 to produce and distribute content independently of the major studio system. The company grew from the need to control distribution of Gibson's own projects, beginning with Braveheart (1995), which won five Academy Awards including Best Picture and Best Director.

Icon Productions produced The Patriot (2000), We Were Soldiers (2002), Apocalypto (2006), and Hacksaw Ridge (2016, directed by Gibson, starring Andrew Garfield, nominated for six Academy Awards). The 2025 film Flight Risk, a thriller starring Mark Wahlberg directed by Gibson, was a co-production between Icon and Davis Entertainment Company, released by Lionsgate.

The UK distribution arm has changed hands multiple times. Between 2008 and 2009, Icon's UK operations were sold to Access Industries, with former UK Film executive Stewart Till as CEO. In November 2011, Icon announced it was closing its UK distribution wing to focus on financing and producing, with Lionsgate UK taking over distribution. In September 2013, Icon Film Distribution UK was purchased by investment company New Sparta. In March 2018, New Sparta sold Icon Film Distribution UK to Kaleidoscope Film Distribution, which owns it as of 2025.

Despite the UK distribution changes, the Australian operations remained under Gibson and Davey's ownership through the Dendy Icon Group. Icon released The Passion of the Christ in Australia, where it was a major box office success.
