Warner Bros. Studios Leavesden
Major UK production facility operated by Warner Bros., originally built for the Harry Potter films. Now a permanent studio complex hosting large-scale Hollywood and British productions.
Overview
Warner Bros. Studios Leavesden is a major film and television production facility located in Hertfordshire, approximately 20 miles northwest of London. The site was originally a Rolls-Royce aircraft engine factory that was converted into a temporary film studio for the James Bond film GoldenEye (1995). Warner Bros. leased the facility for the entire Harry Potter film series (2001-2011) and subsequently purchased and permanently converted it into a state-of-the-art studio complex.
The facility covers approximately 200 acres and includes large sound stages, backlots, production offices, workshops, and the Warner Bros. Studio Tour London, a popular tourist attraction based on the Harry Potter sets and props.
History
The Leavesden site was built during World War II as a factory for Rolls-Royce aircraft engines. After the war, the facility was used for various industrial purposes until EON Productions converted it into a temporary studio for GoldenEye in 1994. The site's enormous hangars, high ceilings, and open floor space made it ideal for large-scale film production.
Warner Bros. leased Leavesden for all eight Harry Potter films, a production run spanning a decade (2000-2010). The continuous occupation allowed the studio to build and maintain permanent sets, prop workshops, and production infrastructure that grew more sophisticated with each film. After the final Harry Potter film wrapped, Warner Bros. purchased the site and invested over 100 million pounds in converting it into a permanent, purpose-built studio complex.
Since reopening as a permanent facility, Leavesden has hosted The Dark Knight Rises (2012), Edge of Tomorrow (2014), Fantastic Beasts films (2016-2022), Wonder Woman (2017), Justice League (2017), Barbie (2023), and numerous other major productions.

What Filmmakers Should Know
Leavesden operates primarily as a facility for Warner Bros. productions, though stages are available for third-party bookings when not occupied by WB projects. The UK's Audio Visual Expenditure Credit (up to 25.5% of qualifying UK expenditure) makes Leavesden attractive for international productions. The facility's scale and modern infrastructure accommodate the largest tentpole productions.
For independent filmmakers, Leavesden's primary relevance is as an indicator of the UK production landscape's capacity and the scale of international investment in British studio infrastructure.
