Overview

Lionsgate is one of the largest independent entertainment companies in North America, operating outside the Big Five studio system while competing directly with major studios for theatrical market share. Founded in 1997 in Vancouver, British Columbia, the company relocated its primary operations to Santa Monica, California, and has grown through strategic acquisitions and franchise development into a global production and distribution powerhouse.

Lionsgate's film division produces and distributes approximately 15 to 20 theatrical releases per year, spanning franchise tentpoles, genre films, mid-budget originals, and prestige titles. The company also operates a significant television production business and the Starz premium cable and streaming network.

History

Frank Giustra founded Lions Gate Entertainment in 1997 in Vancouver. The company's early strategy focused on acquiring and distributing independent and genre films at low cost, building a library and theatrical distribution infrastructure. The acquisition of Artisan Entertainment in 2003 brought the Terminator rights and an established distribution operation.

Lionsgate's trajectory changed with the Saw franchise (2004-2021), which demonstrated the company's ability to produce high-grossing genre content on micro budgets. The studio then scaled up dramatically with The Hunger Games franchise (2012-2015), which collectively grossed nearly $3 billion worldwide and established Lionsgate as a legitimate competitor to the major studios for tentpole properties.

Other significant franchises include John Wick (2014-present), Twilight (through the Summit Entertainment acquisition in 2012), Expendables, and Now You See Me. The studio has also distributed prestige titles including La La Land (2016), Knives Out (2019), and Bombshell (2019).

What Filmmakers Should Know

Lionsgate acquires and develops projects across a broad budget range, from micro-budget genre films to $100 million-plus franchise entries. The studio has a strong track record with horror, action, and thriller genres, and actively seeks franchise-capable properties.

For independent filmmakers, Lionsgate's genre orientation means horror, thriller, and action projects with commercial hooks receive serious consideration. The studio also acquires festival titles through its more prestige-oriented releases. Submissions route through agents and managers with relationships at the company.
