Overview

Lucasfilm is the production company behind two of the most valuable film franchises in history: Star Wars and Indiana Jones. Founded by George Lucas in 1971, the company also operates Industrial Light and Magic (ILM), the visual effects pioneer, and Skywalker Sound, one of the most respected post-production audio facilities in the world. Disney acquired Lucasfilm in 2012 for approximately $4.05 billion, and the company now operates as a subsidiary of Walt Disney Studios under the leadership of president Kathleen Kennedy.

Lucasfilm is headquartered at the Letterman Digital Arts Center in the Presidio of San Francisco, a campus that houses the company's production, post-production, and technology operations.

History

George Lucas founded Lucasfilm Ltd. in 1971 in San Rafael, California. After the commercial success of American Graffiti (1973), Lucas used his leverage to retain sequel and merchandising rights for his next project, a decision that would generate billions. Star Wars (1977) earned $775 million worldwide and launched the most commercially successful entertainment franchise of its era.

Lucas founded Industrial Light and Magic in 1975 specifically to create the visual effects for Star Wars. ILM went on to revolutionize visual effects technology across subsequent decades, developing breakthroughs in motion control photography, computer graphics, digital compositing, and performance capture. ILM's client list extends far beyond Lucasfilm, providing effects for hundreds of films from other studios.

The Star Wars prequel trilogy (1999-2005) and the Indiana Jones sequels sustained the franchise through the 2000s. Disney's acquisition in 2012 led to a new trilogy of Star Wars films (The Force Awakens, The Last Jedi, The Rise of Skywalker), standalone films (Rogue One, Solo), and multiple Disney+ series including The Mandalorian, Andor, Obi-Wan Kenobi, and Ahsoka.

Notable Divisions

  • Industrial Light and Magic (ILM) -- visual effects company with facilities in San Francisco, Vancouver, London, Singapore, Sydney, and Mumbai. ILM has earned over 30 Academy Awards for Visual Effects.
  • Skywalker Sound -- post-production audio facility located at Skywalker Ranch in Marin County. Provides sound design, mixing, and editing for Lucasfilm productions and external clients.
  • Lucasfilm Games -- manages video game licensing and development partnerships for Lucasfilm properties
  • ILM Immersive (formerly ILMxLAB) -- develops immersive entertainment including VR, AR, and themed experiences

What Filmmakers Should Know

Lucasfilm develops projects exclusively within its owned intellectual properties (Star Wars, Indiana Jones). Directors and writers are hired to work within these franchise frameworks. The company has hired directors from independent and international backgrounds, including Rian Johnson, Gareth Edwards, and Tony Gilroy, demonstrating openness to distinctive creative voices within the franchise context.

ILM and Skywalker Sound accept external client work from other studios and independent productions. ILM is one of the top-tier VFX vendors in the world, and Skywalker Sound offers mixing and sound design services at its Marin County facility. Access to these services requires booking through the respective divisions and budgets commensurate with their premium positioning.
